Can someone advise or has experience with using greased in cloth or caulking tissue as sealant between shafts and woden parts. ? Sikaflex or comparible has no result against water penetration along stering shaft tube and prop shaft tube housing. Starminx is from 1954 build by the bute slip yard .

I feel that you'll need something heavier than grease to seal outside your stern tube. I have a tin of bituminous paste, called "Pabco", which is intended for sealing the tarred felt used on flat roofs. This may be of some use, if you can find some. The brand name may be local to me [Australia], so look for the type of material, rather than the particular brand.

If you are talking about filling the void between the sterntube and surrounding wood the traditional material is white lead paste.
It is very difficult to get the stuff in as it's consistency is fairly dry and crumbly. The old-timer who showed me how to do it had rigged up a tool which looked like a grease gun to force the paste in.

Have you thought of epening up gap so that it is big enought to drive in cotton corking then topping over that?
