Water pump not turning off

So where would the esteemed members of the forum check to fix this one then.

Beneteau oceanis. Standard water pump arrangement that pressurises the system then turns off in theory.

Last time we used the boat, it worked fine.

This week, the pump just keeps going. Tanks are full, water comes out, it just doesn't seem to recognise when the system is pressurised. Working round it by turning off at the circuit breaker

What senses the pressure? Diaphragm and a microswitch?. Check/replace micro switch. (about £1)

Or non-serviceable pressure sensor? Replace! (about £20)

Also possible that the pump is not performing properly and not producing sufficient pressure to operate the pressure sensor.
 
If its a pressure switch the pump would keep pumping, until something blew! Does the pressure seem very high when you open a tap? No, then maybe an inlet valve leaking, if yes, I would then look at pressure switch. Also check for leaks, that's the normal thing.

Second an obscure leak-several winters ago my copper supply pipes froze;burst;then thawed.
The following spring I had just the same problem and finally found the split pipe hiding away in the back of a locker.
 
I had this problem too after refilling, having run the tank empty. In the end several good wallops with my fist made it function normally. I suspect a bit of gunk from the tank had jammed the pump and that I had dislodged it.
 
If my tank has run dry, my pump will continue to run while there is air in the system. Opening the hot and cold taps until they stop sputtering usually does the trick.
 
I had this problem while working on my engine recently. It turned out that I had removed an earth connection to the head. This affected the electrics and made the pump run continuously. The problem was solved by clamping the earth to the engine block while the head was removed. So my suggestion is check the power supply to the pump.

This was pretty close to the actual issue.

Problem was linked to electrical problems. (See thread re knackered batteries).

Issue resolved itself as soon as engine was running, batteries go discharged a bit, re-emerged. Now on charge, fixed. Suspect that pump had enough juice to go around but not enough to pressurise the system. (Fingers crossed)
 
Hitting the pump with a hammer is probably not the best way of removing debris from the pump seals.

Take the pump apart and clean the rubber seals inside the head. Reassemble and should be fine. Then fit a strainer in the supply line. For some reason Beneteau dont seem to fit one. Try Jabsco 46400-0012
