Just realised I made a mistake while playing with the impeller yesterday - I wish somone has told me how much fun boats can be before I bought my first one.

Every time I have changed an impeller in the past i have a procedure, I photograph it on my phone, take the old one out and put the new one in according to the picy. Yesterday I took no photo. I am 80% sure I know which way round it goes - but just in case, has anyone got a photo of the impeller in situ the could let me have (or A sketch would work).

Thanks.

Most people try to put them in the "right" way but they vanes quickly flip over if you dont,

Normally note the orientation of the vanes before removing the old one and fit the new one the same .

The W/S manual has some photos that show the orientation.

However, the pumps revolve so that the vane tips travel the long way round from inlet to outlet, ie not over the cam plate and the tips obviously trail so they point in the opposite direction to the direction of rotation

In the case of the MD11 the pump rotates counter-clockwise when viewed from the back of the engine ... ie in the same direction as the crankshaft.

It makes no difference. Some pedantic folk put them in with the vanes in their running position however if you eyball the pump having put it in with the vanes in Astern position they just flip when the engine is started. Just think how often they get flipped the wrong way when the engine bounces back of compression when starting and stopping!

Cool - you learn so much in here, its great. Whoever told me that Diesel engines are simple because there are no electrics, wasn't being entirely truthful. Marginally less complex?

Just wait till you win the pools and buy a boat with a new diesel.....It will
probably have common rail injection and an electronic engine management
system. :) :)

Do the pools still exist - my Old Dad use to have a man come round every Thursday and pick them up. Tight they disappeared with him! As for the rest, never heard if them - long may it remain so.

If concerned, fit with vanes TRAILING direction of rotation. Can send piccies of MD series if you email me (laurie@lmilton.co.uk)

Thanks e-mail sent. I will share a copy of my 'manual' when finished if yo want one (remember its an idiot guide and not a workshop manual!)
