Water Pump Impellor Disintegrated

My engine cooling pump failed with 4 of the 6 vanes sheared off from the rubber
impellor. Brand new Bukh 24 engine 12 hours running. Water intake strainer clean.
Any ideas on cause?

Have you:
run it dry?
run aground - stirred up the bottom sharp particles pass thru the pump and cut off the blades-voila!

Always carry a spare!

Stick a new impellor on. May be just bad luck!!

Bad luck I guess, ASAP can supply impellors that are guaranteed to be able to run dry.

Have you found and removed ALL the bits of rubber which broke off?. Otherwise you could be faced with intermittent overheating problems in the future. It is worth stripping the pipes and heat exchanger if you dont have all the bits.

Quite common for importers to test engines before delivery, installing engineer should have checked impeller on first commission, for dry running damage.


I agree as to the hunt for the missing bits, as they commonly come back to the pump when the engine is stopped , ruining another one!
