Are these things absolutely necessary to refit an Alpha 1 Gen 2 stainless steel water pump housing? just seems I can do the job without them if all they do is help guide the cover over the bolt holes. thanks

They may be more than just guides to locate the cover. They may accurately position it.

thanks, a good point.. I think I'll ascertain the bolt size and make my own pins up by sawing the heads off

Not at all necessary. Just line up the bottom plate, gaskets and top cover with a pair of suitably sized philips screwdrivers as you put the other bolts in.

Water Pump Face Seal Setting Tool
sounds good to me, thanks for the tip.
reading the sterdrive manual again I notice it makes mention of a Pump Face Seal Setting tool that positions the face seal at exactly the correct height up the drive shaft and apparently, failure to do so = early life failure.. most kits include this tool, does mine? does it heck
so once again I'm in the position of buying another kit that includes it or asking for some further good advice as o how I can install the face seal with using this setting tool (little plastic cup)
