Has anyone an idea why the punp for the h/c water system should run every hour or so despite no water bieng drawn.Have checked for leaks on all the outlets including hot water cylinder. No water in bilges, next step would be to take out the (thing that looks like a ballon) but any ideas would be appreciated.

The valves in the pump could be leaking. So water is going backwards slowly to the tank. Dirt in the water, just a build up of deposits or plain old age.

I had exactly this prob. recently...I traced it to the foot pump which was allowing a small amount of h20 to flow back into the tank and causing the electric pump to run intermittently. If you have a foot pump this is a likely culprit. The valves may br worn. To test, take it out and bung up th inlet and outlet pipes (Iused a couple of old AA batteries) ,leave it for a while and see if prob still occurs Worth a try!!!

Do you have an accumulator/surge tank in the system? That will keep the pressure up overnight unless you have a genuine leaky valve somewhere. The pump clattering briefly every once in a while is not that uncommon unless everything is brand new. Accumulator will also give you enough pressure for a glass of water at night without needing to turn the pump on if you like to shut it off at night.

Although I agree that no valve can claim to be COMPLETELY sealing, our pressurised water system can be left days without losing pressure sufficient to run the pump. I know, because if its left pressurised when I leave the boat and turn the electrics off, the pump does not run immediately I turn the electrics back on. Sometimes, I turn the tap on when I go onboard to fill the kettle without the electrics, and the tap will run for a minute or so on the pressure thats in the system, before dribbling to a halt and reminding me to turn the batteries on!

Same on our last boat...

Anyway, a long answer to say that there is a leak in any system that doesn't do the above.

thanks all, sorry for lateness of reply but work called. I have an accumulator and also a footpump so will try removing pump before taking acion on accumulator. Problem is overcome at night by shutting down system so no great hardship ,just a niggle.once again thanks
