Is there anyone out there who has some good or bad feedback of water makers for sailing vessels. Especially from folks who have installed on a Beneteau 2 cabin 411 oceans. Thanks Paul
Jolly expensive way of making something that is freely available everywhere!
Hang on, can they make beer?

That has give me something to research, I will have 12v and a Honda gen to power at 110 the Desaltor and Spectra sound interesting. Some goos info thank you any more would be a bonus. Paul
presumably you never leave sussex?
I have a Spectra 150 Deluxe fitted for use in the Med. Not used extensively yet as only reached Port St.Louis last October and will start into the Med next month. Worked well on the way including the French rivers -advice was not to use in the canals!
Easy to use and 'pickle' and the UK agent is Furneaux Riddle - 023 9266 8621. Jim is their Spectra specialist who is very knowledgeable and helpful.
Left in 89! Personally I think water makers are unnecessary in the Med. You don't want to use them in dirty harbours anyway. Not really nec for ARC or Carib or US east coast either.
Justifiable in the Pacific no doubt. The other thing is that they are used to keep water tanks permanently full, slowing the boat down!
Depends which part of the meddy you are in! You would never use them in a harbour anyway, why? if in harbour water may be available, at a price, but when cruising and at anchor?? Never mind some folk like them some dont, I do.
We chose to install a Katadyn / Pure 80E.
Not modular but a neat boxed 12v unit that fitted under the floor in our Hanse 461. It cost less than $2,000 purchased ex USA including shipping and tax (Westsail on ebay) and with take-off from engine intake and exit via sink outlet it was easy to fit. No new through hulls.
Produced 14 litres per hour and consumed 4 Ah - both which met our needs perfectly.
We did not have a generator and invariably ran our engine 3 hours most days to recharge batteries. Meaning we ran this unit at the same time and topped up our daily consumption (which was 40 litres).
I've no experience of other units but this one never missed a beat in 4 years and it was very useful in far east Med and Caribbean.
Good luck
