the engine was running slow but firing ok .when i opened the throttle there was a clicking sound and i started to lose powerr.i slowed to about2000 rev and limped home . the engine fired water out of the 4 cylenders with the plugs out the oil is milky under the rocker cover, in the sump there could be a bit of water but it looked like oil not milk.there was a little water in the carb. there is a flap in the exhaust that looks as if there is a bit of rubber worn off the end. when i took the top bit off the manifold the gasket broke (or was it leaking there looked like brown marks on the inside )
Most likely the head gasket has gone allowing coolant into the cylinder. But there are various other ways coolant could have got in - cracked head or block being the next most likely.
However, if you have a heat exchanger on the manifold, that can also leak water into the engine via the manifold.
How is the exhaust arranged? Does it run directly from the manifold to the exhaust port, or is there a swan neck arrangement to stop water being forced up the exhaust. If a rubber flap was fitted and is missing it is quite possible that water had been driven up the exhaust pipe into the engine by wave action on the stern - it takes surprisingly little.
You do need to find out where the water came from before you go much further. Its probably too late now to determine whether it was coolant, fresh, or salt water - always the first thing to check when water is in the wrong place anywhere on a boat.
Do something fast. Leaving water inside an engine for more than a day or so is a recipe for extremely expensive repairs. Meanwhile drain the water down completely. Change lub oil and turn the engine over for a minute or so on the starter motor. Get someone who knows what they are doing to look at it asap.
