Hi I seam to be getting a puddle of water appear at the helm, i have teak decking, i have just had the covers replaced, so i know its not that. has anyone else had this problem, if so what caused it !!!!

Hi

I used to get water on the helm seat and it came from 2 places. The first cause was the canopy, the water ran down the radar arch but the canopy touched in that area and diverted the flow onto the inside of the cockpit and it formed a puddle on the helm seat, my spare canopy did not have this problem. To sort out the problem a small piece of sponge under the canopy held it away, no more puddle.

Now the main problem one was the window frame, easy to fix but took ages to find out the cause. I always seemed to have water on the inside of the window frame by my right elbow, when it reached a certain level it would then run down the GRP onto the floor where my feet would be, it this the area you are talking about? or is it an overspill from the seat area getting wet from the canopy?

Anyway the cause was that the drainage hole on the outside of the window frame is not at the bottom so the inside of the frame moulding always had water in it and was seeping through one of the fasteners that hold the frame to the GRP, I worked out the lowest point of the frame and drilled a hole, there was a lot of water in there. I have since then done this to a few S28's.

I hope this maybe of some help to you.

I had water ingress to the helm through the sidescreen rubber seal. I applied some black mastic to the seal inner and outer and all fixed.

It was very surprising how much water came in!! Most seeped into the helm seat locker, and if left for a few weeks, required considerable bailing.

Might be worth re-sealing underneath the helm cushion to keep the locker dry.

Thanks FlowerPower, but problem solved at root. Once window seal repaired, no water ingress. The helm seat cushion acts as the locker cover, so inappropriate to seal.

My baot is a Sunline, quite close to Sealine style etc (built just down the road), so I expect the Sealine to be similar.

Ah ha. Not quite. Under Helm seat on an S28 is meant to be sealed. The seat the other side has the hinged base...

A friend of mine and a subsciber to this forum, gwalia, has the contact details for the seal manufacturer of the windows of Sealine S28's and probably other manufacturers as well, he said he saved a packet going direct, drop him a PM, I am sure he will not mind.

As a fellow S28 owner good luck with the leak and let me know how you go on, always handy to share top tips especially with a fellow S28 owner.
