water in oil

A small amount of water (about 500ml) was accidentally put into the oil tank on my Volvo MD2030. (My own fault, never assume that someone else knows which cap is which). We have pumped out all the oil and water.What should we do next

When you removed the mixture, what colour and consistency was it ?

Into the lubrication tank. It came out black, the water came out first and then the black oil.

You said you removed the oil and water. The water will settle out of the oil.= before you put the oil back

Did you get the tank empty. I would trim the boat in my case so it was lying to starboard and down by the head which ensures a syphon pipe down the filler gets out the last drop so if you do likewise to suite your boat then the tank will be as good as dry however if worried about a few drops then there is no harm in adding bug killer to the fuel you put back and any water will be separated out by your primary filter.

Unless you put the water oil mixture in a food blender the water will be in droplets in the fuel and not emulsified so will separate out sufficiently for your purposes..Just don t fly at 42,000 ft for 7 hours on a polar route then do a zero thrust approach into Granton or the turbines might roll back due to freezing in the bearing oil cooler just when you want full astern . other than that you ll be fine.

Oh you mean THE SUMP????

In this case then also what remains is of little concern and put back clean lubricating oil and use this as a chance for an oil change.... Then run the enine to get the oil as hot as possible and any remaining moisture will soon evaporate away through the breather .

There is often moisture present in the sump of a diesel engine as will be seen by the presence of emulsified oil around the oil filler cap.

Perhaps your friend thought a cap on the engine marked 710 was for water?????? If you turn it the other way round it might say OIL.

Many thanks. I remember hearing a joke about the 710 cap sometime ago. Not so funny now. Actually it isn't marked OIL. It has an icon which looks like a "water" droplet on it. Bloody Volvo!!

A more cautious approach might be to run the engine for half an hour in neutral and then do an oil & filter change just to be sure

You just need to be sure then engine reaches operating temperature and stays there long enough to evaporate the water, bit like boiling a kettle dry.

It's never a good idea to run a diesel engine in neutral, and in this case I can't see much advantage. Replace the contaminated oil with fresh stuff and go motoring for an hour. Not flat out, moderate revs and power. Almost certainly this will cure the problem completely. Check the dipstick and inside the rocker cover, if there is lots of evidence of emulsion, especially on the dipstick, repeat the whole process.
