Hi I have found milky oil in my gearbox oil and wonder is their a usual suspect for such. I.E. water pump . Rather than a more involved job of seals on prop shaft. The gear shift has gone very stiff and will only go into gear when helped with a block of wood taping it.any help please . Kieron

first thing i would do is get the shite oil out and put fresh in ,and i am sure help will come along

Easiest solution is to pressure test and use soapy water around the seals to find the leak. You may be able to couple a bicycle pump or similar to apply some pressure, it doesn't need much.

Prop shaft seals are number 1 suspect as they are easily damaged by fishing line etc.

Drive shaft seals second most likely

Shift rod seal could also be leaking

If you have not replaced the seals on the oil level and drain screws these can also be the source of water ingress

Pressure test on its own not a great deal of help as you are only testing for leakage from the box ... it needs to also be combined with a vacuum test to check for inwards leakage which is your problem if water is entering.

Probably worth replacing all the seals at the same time......... Job then done and should have no more trouble for a good few years.

.
Need more info before commenting on the stiff gear change. What is the year and the model number? Dont recognise the description "FBI".

Often though the shift lever shaft becomes stiff where it passes though in to the "leg" due to corrosion and lack of lubrication.

If you keep whacking it eventually something will break !

Hi Vic,it is an evenrude 75 h/p FFI year 2002;thanks for your help. Kieron

It should be possible to buy a gearcase seal kit that includes all the seals gaskets O rings etc necessary to completely reseal the gear case.

While you are doing the seals it would be sensible to also do a water pump overhaul. There's a kit for that too but I am not sure what that kit contains. Maybe rather more than necessary.
