Water In Fuel

I have to regularly drain an inch or so of water from the glass bowl of one of my diesel pre filters/separtors. Especially after a reasonably high speed run of around two to three hours. Its not affecting the running or starting of the engine at all. But it is a bit of a pain. The other filter/tank I hardly ever have to touch.

I have changed the seal on the deck fitting, but I guess it is to late.
I think I am just going to have to bite the bullet, drain and dispose of the diesel in that tank and start again. Fortunately there is an inspection hatch in the tank, so that should make life easier.

Any tips, before I try this?

Hi we meet again.
I assume from your email that you have 2 tanks and that they each have their own filler cap. If this is so and you feel you need to drain the problem tank I would first find the actual problem (was the seal broken?) or else it is going to happen all over again (I expect you have that already thought out but just checking) I would drain the old fuel out but wouldn't throw it but let it stand, drain off the water and filter the remaining back in the tank, unless its only a few litres and not worth the time. Anyway thats what I would do.

By the way your boat looked good when I followed you in under the bridge the other day.

Cheers for that steve, the wifey kept looking back and was convinced it was you behind us last week.
I am pretty sure it was the filler at some point, but now the water is there it seems to be there for good. I have changed the seal once, but struggling a bit to find the optimum size o ring.

I had this caused by a split o ring in the deck filler, I ginored it for a while as the filter bowl was not full and then one day the engine stopped...best address it now.

Saw you off Pottery Pier yesterday, was going to pop over but it got rather busy there didn't it!!
Are you still having problems with obtaining the correct o ring for the fuel filler cap, if so let me have the dimensions and I'll see what I can do for you. Have you done anything about draining the fuel yet?

All sorted, managed to get an o ring from the Cobbs chandlery. Drained off the tank (decided to dispose of it and start again). Just managed to reach the bottom of the tank through the inspection hatch, to clean out black sludge. Cleaned the glass bowl, new diesel. Everything nice and clean. See how we go.

Up to my armpits in diesel and black stuff, whilst the the sun was beating down on saturday, but had to be done. Hence the lazy day on Sunday off pottery Pier.

Glad to hear you have it all under control, was there much of the black stuff in the bottom of the tank and did you notice any water (I know the 2 go hand in hand) but was it visible to the eye? Do you use any additive in your fuel?

Steve, difficult to tell how much water was actually in the bottom of the tank. Not to much black stuff, just a coating with no real thickness. Bearing in mind the tanks were supposedly cleaned about 3 years ago by the previous owner. I have used Fuel Set up to now, is this any good?
