my sureflo pump- based fresh water system has started 'stuttering'. I recently fitted a replacement pump but don't think the problem quite dates from then, though I cannot be sure. Certainly I never had the trouble with te old pump (which was exactly the same model). Can anyone suggest the cause please?

I suspect you need an accumulater. which is basicaly a tank of air in the system which the pump can compress, cos it can't compress water.

I'm almost certain your surflo has a micro pressure switch, mine has but it depends on the model, if it's shutting off and on by itself then it must have one.

The normal cause of this on-off-on-off behavior is a small leak in the system, check for leaking tap washers then check all hose connections then all hose lengths.

My brother had a similar problem on his narrowboat and no water leak when i found the problem it was 1 of the lesure baterys was giving up the gost ( 2 fitted ) and a long run on wiaring cousing loss of power to pump but as others have already said a small leak is most likely

If the stuttering is immediately after turning off flow from a tap it is unlikely to be caused by leak in the system. It can be caused by the pipework expanding under pressure, i.e. the hoses stretching in diameter, especially if hot water hoses are not designed for the water temperature.

I would suggest the pressure switch is set at a slightly higher pressure on your new pump than the previous one, you could try adjusting it but I can't remeber if the Shurflo design allows adjustment. If you don't have an accumulator in the system immediately after the pump, I would suggest you need one.

Might also be worth checking the pump's return valve - there may be a slight leak of pressure back to the water tank. Quite common early season if the tank has been standing dry all winter: the first few fills flush out some debris.

When mine does that I just put some air into the accumulator and it cures it for a few months until the tube in the accumulator loses pressure again.

We have no accumulator and you have to be within a few feet of the pump to even hear it at all.

Pump has never had a problem since but for a small air leak on the suction side when first installed.
