I noticed some water was weeping into the bilge, and on examination found that the connection for the engine water feed into the stern gland had corroded, and of course then sheared whilst i was examining it. I have inserted a bung as a temporary measure to stop the water ingress.

My question is - how safe is it to try and remove the stub from the sterngland whilst the boat is in the water? It was just a trickle before I put the bung in, but I don't want to get in a world of pain if if I run into difficulties getting the broken stub out, and large quantities of water find its way in!

Thanks

Drill it out , or use a stub remover .Then Tap another thread for a hose tale ( nipple ) to reconnect up .
A new heads €10000 and whole heap of pain ( special jig ) to remove in situ . 49 yr old engine - note the date stamp “ 75 “

A £50 fix It was the take off for the heater matrix , age and bimetallic corrosion caught up with time .

I have sorted the problem. The root cause was that a connector was not DZR and had corroded. I was lucky that the stub came out ok, and the connector has been replaced with a suitable fitting from ASAP, which arrived in 1 day.
