With some excellent tips from the forum, I successfully removed and serviced a pair of Gibb's #3 winches. At the time, once I'd got the thing apart, I wondered where water falling down the top went to, since there didn't seem to be any drainage holes. Never the less, the inside was always dry. Now that they are back on and spinning freely, they fill up with water. What did I do?

probably grease sealing the hole where the screw with the starry washer goes through to the spindle.

But with the star washer screw screwed into the hole, how can the water get out?

Did you need to replace the plastic bush/rings under the circlips? I'm considering making some stainless ones.

One of the plastic rings was broken, but still functioned, so I just put it back in. I'd read such such spares were unavailable.
