hi,

i have a 20' colvic fishing boat currently moored at porlock weir. im getting sick of the mud as you have to drag a dinghy down the bank and 90% of the time get covered in mud. or climb down the wall on a home made contraption that's not allowed to be bolted to anything, which is a bit scary. plus if the tides too high you cant get out due to the bridge.....but very very cheap. 200 quid p.a.

so i was thinking of moving to watchet where theres a pontoon so i can get onto the boat. electric. water. written fixed rules. crane. slipway. but a lot more money. 1500 quid p.a.

is it worth it? my boat will only do about 6 knots, and has very minimal comforts on board (head, camper stove, no water or electrics beyond a light) so staying out overnight isnt a nice prospect. whats the fishing like near watchet? what happens if i miss the gate? i live near minehead so i need to drive wherever i moor.

thanks

guy

Really depends if you can justify the extra £25 per week! You would probably enjoy it more, therefore use it more and if you spend a few hundred on heating, canopy, electrics etc you will definitely get a lot more use. No idea on the fishing or what happens IF you miss the lock in, but atleast its sheltered in the outer harbour.

they haven't decided if they are going to offer the 6 month deal this year.

i grew up in salcombe, with a drying pontoon (victoria quay) and i miss that access. it didnt have fingers.

Seems a bit silly if they drop the 6 month option to me considering how much money they lost with the gate and mud situation of late you think they would be glad for any money coming in.

My thoughts entirely. They ought to extend the offer to any trailable sized boat as I'm sure this would significantly boost summer berth take-up. In a very empty marina it needs courageous marketing to bring the punters in!

i would like to trailer mine away, its just in my towable range on my current car, 2 odd tons, and 2wd. i have a 4 wheel braked, galvanised trailer (newly galv'd by allerford forge, fantastic guys who do all sorts of stuff inc stainless at very reasonable rates.....) and i have space at home for it during the winter.... this winter i couldnt see any way of getting it home as how do i manoeuvre 2 tons of boat to within 1 inch under water? no lifting kit at the 'weir. plus i was in the middle of a gearbox swap so couldnt get it to mineshaft or watchet. ...
