I am moving my boat from Cardiff to Dartmouth next month (hopefully).
Cardiff has some advantages, cheap , 24 hour access, bay to play in, great options for a night out. However, if you want to sail when convenient to you the tides severely limit options. I get the impression that most members of the my yacht club either day sail (mainly without leaving the bay), race or use Cardiff as a cheap mooring and sail off for a month or two in the Summer.
Dartmouth takes twice the travel time but is roughly the same price for a swing mooring and offers many more options for my 2 to 3 night pattern of sailing I hope. It is also stunningly beautiful which can not be said for the Northern Bristol Channel.
