Having spent a very enjoyable weekend in the Channel Islands this weekend (thanks for the great hospitality Dom), we returned to Portsmouth after a calm (ish) crossing, which could have been worse had Jimi given us the correct location of the floating container (sorry Jimi a cheap MOBO dig at a raggie ;-) ) with ChrisB4, Nick2 and a raggie friend. We where all patting ourselves on the back at what a good crossing it had been, whilst in the small boats channel entering Portsmouth Harbour, when Lady Hamilton (Sealine T51) cut across our Port Side from the West of the Solent and then pulled back off the throtals, causing us to do the same, whilst in her wake to ensure we did not ride her transom.

All four of us on board could not believe what had happened to us after 10 hours (Guernsey and back) of non eventful motoring, and only when back in the Solent this happened!! After a few expletives from yours truly towards THEM "it could have been the males or females they all looked the same (probably cousins)" we where greeted with a 2 finger salute, adding insult to injury there where 3 children hanging over the side rails at the rear of the boat (without life jackets) that could have easily fallen into the Solent if we had hit them and gone under out bows!!!

The reaction of the hick's on the flybridge beggars belief, 1, they did not believe they did anything wrong, 2 they endangered the life's of their children and 3, they where all very ugly.. the 3rd point I will say is my view and not that of my crew..... this is not saying by any means that Nick2 or ChrisB4 fancied the Adams family on the flybridge (Joanne, and Helen they at no point said they fancied anyone over the whole weekend)

If anyone sees this boat and the pond life that helms it, please make sure you give them a wide berth and return the 2 finger salute on behalf of me, ChrisB4, Nick2 and a raggie that has had all his suspicions confirmed of what MOBO's are capable of and how some have no respect of others.

Rant over....

yeah, they learn how to go realy really close from the pinhead Alpha One at the sealine school in the Hamble, it must take years of practise. If you ring the sea school and explain that it's not a bad idea to stay 100yds when going at speed on a mobo, or drop off the plane, they will argue till blue in the face.

seriously, hope all okay.

Ahem, cough, splutter, frown.

If this were a pub, and you were surrounded by Sealine owners, this would be the point at which they would exchange knowing glances, make their excuses, and reform into a group round the corner that didn't include you...

Steve, have you considered an <A target="_blank" HREF=http://www.qhmportsmouth.com/index.php?subject=increp>incident report</A> via QHM web site. If you belive the actions were both dangerous and an infringment of the use if the small boat channel. Glad you had a good trip - give us a shout next time you doing something like that/forums/images/icons/wink.gif

What good does filling in an incident report do? Just gives the Government ammunition to legislate. IMHO

I met this plonker just off the red bouy outside Cowes. You should hear the language we got from his BIMBO. Hang the bu**er from the yardarm.

Cheeky Moose, if he is indicative of what people think all Sealine owners are like, I am putting Broom stickers on my boat... However there is a down side to that, Nick2 would think I have invested in those nice pipe and slippers I saw in Guernsey..

Oh, they're not all nice, Steve. Remember 'Big Knob' or whatever it was called in Weymouth/Dartmouth/Brixham?

I am sure that was not his boat! I know he used to have a Grand Banks, it would be a bit of a change!

Actually incident reports are mandatory under the Port Marine Safety Code - if you had to take emergency action to avoid a collision then you must report it, see my LNTM 42-02 (Implementation of the Port Marine Safety Code). You can now report online at www.qhmportsmouth.com and it doesn't cost you a penny.

But what good does it do I hear you say. Well firstly it lets me investigate, apportion blame and when necessary prosecute. On average two or three mariners a month receive formal cautions for breaking one rule or another and we prosecute the most serious cases.

Equally important however it lets me keep an eye on where the problems are in the Dockyard Port. Armed with this information I can make a case to find money to address particular issues. The removal of the submerged barrier south of No Man's Land Fort is a good example of this. The best example however is the Harbour Patrol which was introduced specifically to reduce the number of incidents in the harbour entrance.

The entrance is however still a difficult place and after analysing a number of incidents over the summer we have just agreed at the Dockyard Port Forum (my stakeholder consultation group) to make changes to marks and procedures for next year. New marks are expensive and it is only with the data I have from Mariners that I can get the funding.

The bottom line therefore is that firstly you are required to report incidents whether you want to or not and secondly all responsible mariners will report without coercion anyway because they know it helps the harbour master make the port safer for other mariners.

Happy steaming!
