Just wondering, Why I never see any posts regarding Perkins 100 series 3cyl engines, are they not very commen for boats, or are they too small, or is it that they are so reliable that no one ever gets any problems with them?
Mine is a 100 series 3cyl which was new in 1998, I have ran it since april for aprox 50hrs and the oil hasent even got discoloured.
Appreciate any views on this model of engine, good, bad, or indifferent.
Thanks.

Had one in a Jaguar 27 I owned for 3 years. It was new but I think the oil still got a little mucky over the season. Seems a bit odd if really clean. Great little engine, nice and smooth and not too thirsty. Never missed a beat and a lot quieter than the Yanmar 2GM I've lived with for the last 10 years( not complaining - a good 'un in its own right)

Only problem was a short caused by the connections at the back of the alternator touching the jubilee clip on an adjacent hose. Only happened after tightening the alternator drive belt which shifted the alternator and caused the connections to get too close to the clip. Worth checking as it was the factory assembly that left things at risk. It's quite congested back there so can easily happen.

I think Volvo took over production or sales from Perkins so that may be the reason you don't see the model around so much.

I guess like most of the marine diesels, look after it, give it clean fuel and you shouldn't go too far wrong.

No Donald, But I think the engine has had very very little use and this is why the oil is so clean, but I will be changing it this wk. ( oil )

I also had a Perkins Perama - which was the name Perkins marketed it under. They only sold them for two or three years before Volv Penta took over all the small Perkins engines, re-engineered them slightly and painted them green, made spares more expensive etc etc.
No problem in my Jaguar 27 at the time. I made sure I changed the oil at the end of every season though. It had about 650 hrs when I sold the boat a couple of years ago.
Good engine, made in Japan incidently unlike the present VP range(or so VP have told me)
