Where is it now law that waste water needs to go to a holding tank, and does this include washing up and shower water? Does anyone have any experience of waste water pump out, and is there a universal size coupling (dont believe there could possibly be anything agreed as a world standard) Do people pump out to shore facility, or wait until they are out of the marina and then discharge? What size holding tank is recommended?

there have been lots of threads on this subject, do a search on 'holding tank'

it is still legal to discharge washing water, even on the canals.

there is supposedly a 'standard' pump-out fitting. i put them on my boat 3 years ago but have never used them, i always go out to sea and pump out.

the size of tank varies enormously from little things that fit round an existing toilet and hold 2 or 3 gallons, up to ship size. on our cat we use the hollow keels which hold 50 gallons each and last a crew of 4 about a week at anchor.

the mistake often made when installing a pump-out system is to provide inadequate air inlet so that the suction causes something to collapse. ideally you should have an equal sized inlet pipe to allow fresh water to go in as the waste goes out, giving a rinsing action. i don't think that's common yet.

odd question...

the pump-out station has a suction hose and a fresh water feed pipe, it rinses through around 5 times the tank volume, thereby leaving you with a clean(ish) tank, i.e without a thick layer of sludge at the bottom.

this is common practice on canals.
