Hello out there,
Wonder if any wise old sea dog could answer this question, when you are living aboard and you want to wash your mucky pots and pans, where does the washing up water drain to? also when you had a shower same question applies?

Hi Gabe, washing up water down the galley sink, shower out via shower tray pump overboard, or when using the deck shower in sunnier climes, cockpit drain or use the bathing platform. What type of boat? Bill.

Hi Bill,
We are looking at buying a Sealine 305 Statesman fitted with twin 200horses Volvo's ! Maybe what I should have asked is, do you need a holding tank for the waste water from washing pots or having a shower if your marina is non tidal. /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif

Depends where you are, if in Turkey you need a holding tank for all waste water.
Elsewhere, I think sink and shower water is ok discharged, but toilet waste, no. This is IMHO, some places stipulate different things.

We can put it slightly differently. In many Mediterranean countries it is illegal to discharge 'grey' water (washing up, shower etc) within harbours, and in some cases, within 6 nm of the coast. If caught, you face a fine. So, larger vessels fit grey water holding tanks as well as sewage holding tanks.

Smaller yachts tend to be very discreet about discharging grey water.

Interestingly, some authorities put bilge water into the category of grey water . . . so, theoretically, automatic bilge pumps which discharge overboard break the law . . . obviously, it's better to sink.

Bit of an ass somtimes, isn't it?
