I usually just drive off with my anchor dragging in the water until its all clean. Is this good practise?

Yes. This is an excellent way to build up knowledge and experience of undertaking gelcoat repairs. Highly recommended.

Allow me, on behalf of GCRA (gel coat repairers' association), to confirm that it is very good practise, and recommended by everybody in the industry even the MPBA (marine panel beaters association) for steel boat owners, and FOCME (federation of carpentry master executives) if you own a treewood vessel.

i think you will find it more efficient if you get up a good speed first - then release the anchor into the flow.
this works even better if you use the engine and let out at least 10m of rode.............

Happened to me halfway across Lyme Bay when I moved the anchor to set up the cruising chute but accidentallly dropped it instead!

It's the handbrake turn that stuffs you .. Partic whenyou shout back at the helm "Anchor!" and he mishears and takes offence!

Should be done with Non-Bio and an easy-iron softner .... the anchor is then both clean and easy to fold ....

I take ours home once a season and put them in the washing machine. Make sure you use a pillow case otherwise SWMBO will create merry hell

Not in the Bristol Channel, it won't. It'll likely end up muckier than when you started.

i've tried that theory with the boat's bum too but it does'nae seem to work. the hull's nivverr ony cleaner. what am i doing wrong?
