A recent poster seemed to think that Wash & Waves were the same. I would like to take this opportunity to illustrate a few differences.

1/ Waves, while not all the same height, tend to be fairly regular & predictable. There is always the odd one in seven or so that is bigger or steeper, but you know they are there or thereabouts for the duration of the journey. Generally, wind pressure on the sails reduces rolling significantly & it is possible to move around & work the boat with care.

2/ Wash occurs as a small number of very short steep waves in close succession on an otherwise calm sea. Wash is not often a problem on the open sea unless it is very calm. So, one is often working on deck or below, focussing on a task in a sheltered area when wash hits. It is seldom a problem if helmsman has time to turn into the wash as the pitching moment is relatively less, but if hit from the side, your boat will roll suddenly & violently. It is not uncommon for people for be thrown off balance and fall. Injuries & accidents are quite common. The sails will frequently slat, which means that the boom will fly to & fro across the cockpit area at head height.

It was suggested that an opportunity to experience wash would be very instructive to MoBo'ers that don't believe in it. I would be happy to offer that service. I frequently have family & grandchildren on board who also do not understand the risks initially. They soon learn, and "Beware Wash" is as likely to be shouted by the kids as the skipper.

Today I took a ride on the Thames Clipper boat from Greenwich to Embankment. Very enjoyable, but they do go very fast and make a fair bit of wash. I noticed that it slowed down when passing the River Police depot at Wapping!

No one cares today money makes egoists

At least the meds soooooooooo crowded that jet skis and damm MOBOs darent make to much wash!
Ive seen MOBO rage as a large boat at anchor sent its fast tender to ram a MOBO that went into port to fast(through the anchord masses)After that it became a fight,i rowed in to watch but was to late!

Put the lever in the middle gear - there should be a hole through the wheel nut on the cog side, adjust the knurled connector on the cable until the round part of the rod at the end of the wee chain is just level with the end of the axle as seen through the hole. You may have to move the cable clamp on the rear fork to get this adjustment. "Neutral" should now be between the top and middle gears with no slip in either.

Excellent response. Don't forget there may be a lot of oil & dirt obscuring the hole. For a "Quick fix" solution, put the gears in High & then adjust the cable to just remove the slack. This will hit the spot 9 times out of 10.

For the irritating 10th time you will need to get on your hands & knees with a torch to carefully check the "official" adjustment as outlined above.

Great!

I thought i was destined to pedal in top gear for ever for safteys sake and try low gears in town even there its bad when they slip

In the morning ill follow instructions with a cans of break cleaner WD40 & 3 in 1 as well as a good tourch

Its been over 16 years since my single gear Dahon was stolen for the last and final time,i realy liked that bike id bought new at a fair price in StTropez!Im sure they put the wrong price on i paid £120 in 1989 1200Ffr then

The S/S that i now have was £360!! I bought it in Cannes 1994 and have never liked it becouse of slipping gears

I also had a "Strida" that broke its lugs! great bike but badly balanced with weight on the carrier

... and don't forget about a teaspoonful of oil into the little (probably plastic) filler - if you've had it that long, it probably needs it.

I am always amazed about how little wash our sailing boats actually produce. Much less than our tenders!

Not necessarily! I vividly remember surfing my Contessa 33 on the quarter wave kicked up by a Nicholson 55. Managed to keep the tow going for half a mile on the approach to Le Harvre.

The crew on the Nic found it rather distracting as we seemed to be on the verge of climbing into their cockpit.

For anyone who thinks this was foolish, or unseamanlike behaviour, both boats where racing and under complete control at all times.

Id almost forgoten about seviceing it today!!Since i bought that Dahon ive bought several "folding" bikes in junk shops for around 5 euros a time problem is there always to big to stowe. On trips i still ship the Dahon but often end up walking!!!!

Haveing remembered im off to our storage area to get the bike!I think it has a metal cap???When i bought it it was used but in brand new condition the shop had had it for several years as what i thought of as a window prop!!

They still charged me to much!!??
