Was I nasty?

At the weekend I took out my girl friend to give her more practice at setting sails and helming before she goes off and does her day skipper practicle.

Whilst heading back towards Portsmouth we found our selves playing dodgeball with several race fleets. Now I must point out we did keep clear of all boats and not force them into altering course. Except for one and here is were I want to know if I was nasty or not.

We were on starboard tack, a boat on port tack was approaching us and would have easily passed astern of us if he had not decided to tack, both boats are of a similar size (him with race crew, me with girlie having a pootle). So there we are both on starboard tack, him off to my port. Another yacht did pass astern and then tack onto us. Very sporty looking boat and soon started to eat into the lead we had on him.

The boat to my port was just ahead but we were over hauling him quite easily, after a few minutes they waved and asked if I could tack away (in fairly nice terms) I shouted back that I could not as I would then create a situation with the other boat (to my starboard), so he was sat in my dirty air. After a few minutes they then shouted about killing them etc etc.

Therefore when I shouted to him perhaps if they'd had sailed faster they wouldn't have put themselves in the position of me over hauling them. Was this nasty? Let me add I did tack as soon as it was clear for me to do so.

I'm not anti racing, I race myself on 707 and the Sigma from time to time and think I did pretty much everything I could do apart from luff up, basically as I wanted to get where I was going to. Was it his fault for tacking underneath me when he should have gone to windward and then tack, basically going behind me? Or should he have just beared away a fraction to clear my dirty air?

Open to feedback or riddicule as I know how forumites can be.

He was coming from my port side on port tack close hauled, whilst we were on starboard tack close hauled. He then tacked underneath us then putting us on the same course. So he tacked to leeward of my position. We just held speed and course.

If you were "killing him" (melodramatic tart!!) whilt obeying Colregs, he should just ask the RO for redress. They'll probably tell him to pi55 orf, but thats not your problem is it? /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

I am trying to think who was racing. The petit bateaux single handed RTI was Saturday. All the J109's had a one design regatta in Christchurch bay. Its just interesting to see what kind of racers give us others a bid reputation. Had anyone ever had grieg from the big solent racers such as the Swan 45's, Farr 45's etc or do people generally find it to be the smaller "back of the fleet" racers

You did the right thing IMHO. You had no reason to luff up as the leeward boat had chosen its own place there, and you would have risked collision with the other if you'd changed tack.

In any case, in terms of COLREGS, what difference does it make if you are overtaking and to windward?

Yep, his fault for tacking underneath you. Hopefully the guy in question will learn from it, rather than just bitching about the cruiser that messed his race up.

I for one have never really had any real hassle. Had one of the big boats aiming at my transom once, but thats fine I understood what he was doing. However if I'd have been a newbie day skipper and then decided not to stand on as it was my right of way I'm not to sure what he would have done to stop cutting me into pieces if I had flapped stalled and generally errr let go aft etc. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

I suppose you could've depowered for a minute, slowing down enough to let him get ahead, then bear off and sit in his dirty wind ...

Nice that they asked if you could tack out of their way, but as you rightly said - a tack off would've put you in do-dos with their competitor (perhaps that was the plan!)

They could've idled for 30 seconds and tacked behind you ... there is always more than 1 way out of a situation ... and most skippers don't think of the "slowing down" option ... /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Reason for my post really. I certainly didn't want to mess up his race, but I also have to think of not getting my boat sliced in two for making a stupid mistake and tacking into the boat to starboard.

Again, I'm wondering if it had just been my girlfriend on the helm with an inexperienced crew the badgering from the other boat could have possibly caused her to make such a mistake.

I wonder how the other boat would have responded to that

FWIW, I think the leeward racer was mixing up COLREGs with racing rules. However, I agree with you, in normal circumstances, most of us would do the polite thing.

Not all the J109 were at Christchurch....

There were three or four J105 racing and a J133. And some J80 in the sports boats.

Well we aint really on par in the rating dept with the most of the other J109, we are sailing off 1.007 plus the Southern is closer for us and we like their beer!!!
