A few people here seem bent on having a less than happy Easter; if I spot any further instances of abuse of other users then I'll happily divert your angst in another direction by granting you a spell in the cooler...
would also be nice to know wat the red thingy was about. Maybe some one flaming lifeboat man, or maybe me flaming some one for flaming lifeboatman, The plot thickens..!!
I fully understand why "Lifeboats" blunt approach rubbed a few up the wrong way, though I guess his approach may also have been recieved by other's as more posative....(I know not and care less who he is) but guess there are people out there that know nothing and therefore every little helps....for those that know everything and there seem to be plenty of those around on this forum we just have to accept they are a lost caused. What angered me more than anything was the snide and childish remarks made by certain individuals towards this poster. At times myself I get fed up with the constant non boaty drivel that some of your forumites spew out on the Skuttlebutt pages but I accept that that is how people must get thier enjoyment so therefore not my place to whinge. As for a forum set up by a national boating magazine surely we should make every effort and encouragement to try and promote any safety aspect that those with little or no experiance can glean......believe you me it is not an easy task bringing home the body of a loved one....I have done it many times, anything that can help to stop this can only be applauded. After 40 years at sea I dont suffer fools glady, indeed that sea suffers them even less......so come on guys, buck up your idea's and try to treat those around in a way you would expect yourself.
I don't know why people get so upset, it's not as if the post was directed at anybody specifically it was just a general reminder to safety. The same advice is often published in the magazines (the RNLI also advertise the safety check service), but I am sure they don't get many people writing in to complain about it, so why do it on a forum.
If they don't think it is relevant to them, then just ignore it, I really don't see the need to insult somebody. I feel sorry for those who have to live with these people as they obviously lack basic social skills.
I am pretty sure I have overlooked a couple of safety issues on our boat and I bet the same can be said of a lot of others.
I think one of the main reasons many people took exception to Lifeboat's posts across this forum is they don't wish to be lectured to, it has never been a feature here. There is some merit in what you say but unfortunately I think your post also tends towards that as well.
We are all grown ups with our own responsibilities and we all have tendencies not to suffer fools, but we don't have to go round as if we are surrounded by fools. The majority of people on here are far from that and will take exception. There is a free exchange of views on and people will soon bite back.
I am not responsible for anyone else on here and I don't expect them to take any responsibilty for me.
Unfortunately, lecturing others is quite common on here. Perhaps the normal culprits considered their status to be under threat, on this occasion.
I suspect also that in this case there was far more support from the Forum members for the poster's freedom of speech, than there was from those trying to get rid of him.
Anyway, life's too short and so to bed /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif
Kim locked the "Give your boat a safety check" thread in the PBO forum and also deleted another thread where Lifeboat was asking if his posts annoyed people. A small majority supported Lifeboat's safety info posts, I was in the anti camp.
The thread was punchy but had every prospect of turning into a YBW.com classic, where we would all limp away at the end of the fight wiser albeit with a few virtual black eyes.
I was annoyed by Kim's action, maybe the thread had turned nasty in the final 3 hours I missed.
There were some insults starting to fly around so I applied the bucket load of cold sick. We run these forums for a lot of reasons but not necessarily to provide a boxing ring to see which personality hits the canvas last - sorry but there it is.
