It is supposed to show white - it is its anchor light as it is still a ship.

It is supposed to flash red as well though, every 5 seconds I think.

No probs Elessar..am more than happy to be corrected but in mitigation the white light was flashing the RED sequence and there was no red light AT ALL ..I actually did a couple of "laps" around it to see if I,d missed something but hadn't ...ho hum !!

Went to pass it as my reference to turn to stbrd coming from southampton water last week. Bugger it's changed, looks more like a buoy now

Book says it has always had a white 5s light and should be seen 10 miles

Well you're right the almanac says Fl 5s. Ie white.
But the chart says light float, and Fl R 5s.
Never noticed the almanac was wrong because it has always had an anchor light and a red flash.
It seems now the almanac is right and the chart is wrong!

The lightship has never had a red light. It has had an all round white to designate a vessel at anchor , it also had a day mark to dignify the same. It then had/has a white flashing light. I noticed the other week that the all round white has gone but it is still flashing white . The chart (Admiralty) does not show a red light, only that the buoy / ship is red - "R"

Well I'll take your word for it David. I am clearly going mad as I have been past it so many times in the dark I'm sure it was red.
Familiarity and all that. I guess I just know where it is!
I don't doubt you though.
What I am certain of is that it had a continuous white (the anchor light ) and the flashing light as well.

Yes that is correct but both lights were/are white.

Well guys im sorry to say that this old git is still confused ...... so I have to ask, what is the consensus or bottom line as to what IT SHOULD BE ????

I think solitaire and rocksteadee are right and I've gone senile.

Flashing white every 5 seconds. Plus a dimmer, continuous white.
