For all who have Navionics chart 46XG Western Europe.

Navioinics have removed the area from the Wash to Canvey Island from 46XG updates.

This now means you need 2 charts to navigate from The Crouch/Blackwater/Orwell to Ramsgate

The update removed all the wind farm and (for me) all the Crouch buoyage which hase been in lace since 2011.

I got rather upset with them, and sent the following email (from here in Belgium)

Sir/Madam,
I have the 46XG chart, which I bought in the knowledge that it overed my area of the East Coast UK, and across to France, Belgium and the Netherlands.
I updated the chart before I left for my annual cruise, but found it odd that the Crouch Area, the Wind farms were all at least 3 years out of date again.
I was also puzzled that the area on the French Coast from Calais to Dunkerque was shaded out in Red Hatching.
I am now in Nieupoort, and had to go and buy a CF card reader so I could check my chart update, as I believed it was somehow corrupted.
To my amazement, I find that Navionics have arbitrarily cut out the Wash to Canvey Island from the chart area, which cuts all East Coast sailors area in half. This is a monumental error of corporate judgement from Navionics, and I implore you to reverse this very poor judgement. Your customers on the East Coast should not have to purchase 2 charts just to cross the Thames Estuary, with the swapping out of charts.
Now, I called Navionics UK who have offered to amend my chart to include my normal areas, but what about the thousands of other sailors on the East Coast who will be caught out in this catastrophic decision?
Chartplotting is not a new market, you have had years to work out the areas covered by each card.
I chose to purchase the Raymarine plotter, which introduced me to Navionics, based on the chart areas available, and the features covered.

I would remind you that the area you have cut in half is the busiest seaway in the world, with very complex wind farm and TSS routes to consider. Swapping charts halfway across due to some commercial shenanigans with area coverage is tantamount to negligence, especially as there is no announcement other than the pop-up box when updating the chart through Freshest Data.

I bought the chart at the Southampton boat show from the Navionics stand, although I do not have the receipt with me on the boat. I actually doubt if I do have the receipt at home either, as I have registered the card for Freshest Data on your Navionics.com website, from which you should be able to identify both me and my data card. The data package will expire on 13th December 2914, is registered under the following:

CF/46XG

(removed names addresses etc)

Once again, I implore Navionics to reconsider this very poor decision.

Please note that I am navigating back across the North Sea next week returning from my holidays, and I will have only very out of date chartplotting to rely on. Luckily for all, I do maintain a large scale paper chart.

I have copied this email on the YBW.com website (I am a Community Moderator) into a new post on the East Coast and Scuttlebutt sub fora to bring this to the attention of all affected boaters. I shall follow this up with a letter to Yachting Monthly and Practical Boat Owner.

The marine plotter chip market is lagging behind in terms of updates, costs and user friendliness. The increase in use of tablets and smart phones and associated apps may kick them into the 21st century, I'm not holding my breath though.

the trend in car satnavs seems to be lowering costs and lifetime updates.

interesting that the latest Navionics download appears to be about 18 months out of date, surely all downloads should be bang up to date?

good luck in your campaign.

The difference is thought that road based GPS purveyors don't need to buy mapping content from anyone else, they pretty much drive their fleet of cars around collecting the data... Bit more expensive afloat, and as we know UKHO don't give owt away for nowt...

Difficult to see how the chart plotter chip market will develop. Tablets have taken over the market for the plotter at the chart table. For those who want one at the wheel they are nibbling at that market. This means that we'll see a continued growth of tablet packages and prices kept low. The dedicated chart plotter market may continue to contract and maybe prices rise as a result of the small number of players.

Anyone see the Furuno iPad RADAR system?

Agree with chart table plotters becoming tablet based, but I think that most boats will still have a dedicated chart plotter, simply because of daylight viewing and water proofing being an issue with tablets.

Had a look at the furuno system, when my steam driven furuno gives up the ghost it will definitely be on the shopping list.

The waterproofing is sorted but the daylight is definitely not. Nor is the vulnerability of a device that can crash just when you want to avoid doing so! But there make awesome plotters, navigating through the CI's we had two running, one on big scale the other on small scale, made it so simple. The charts cost £30 four years ago with free updates since - my Raymarine RADAR/Plotter cost £170 to update last summer for Wash to IOW - rip off prices.

I have a reply from Navionics, after a discussion, they will swap out my 46XG for a 28XG, as they agree that what I bought is not what I ended up with.

The answer is that Navionics in Italy decided to include mre Inland Waterways data, and due to the 46XG being highly loaded, they snipped the top end of the East Coast. Not helpful.

However, I am happy with the result to some extent, but it doesn't help all those out there with card that are out of 'warranty'.
