Edging into what scandalously is the only fuel facility in the World's second longest natural harbour, Mahon, we came to a grinding, agonising halt on a submerged rock. Our yacht draws 2.1 metres and the jetty under the crane, the most open to the offing, does not offer that depth. It was all the more frustrating that this happened under the disinterested eyes of the gasolineros and the skipper of a local Halberg Rassy who was alongside in the adjacent section facing the pontoons. Yachts are warned not to come alongside under the lift out crane. There is no warning sign and I have found nothing in the pilots. Bearing in mind the lengthy wait for fuel, I would advise filling up elsewhere. The only good news is that water is also available at a modest price.

When was this? I ask because we were there a few weeks ago and a yacht had all kinds of problems, when we were there. We anchored off to wait for the fuel berth to open, sunday morning it was. Of course they say you cant anchor there, but stuff them, we waited about an hour for the fuel berth to open. If it was you, we were the large wooden motorsailer that came in just after this incident.
They need to warn people about that rock/concrete or whatever it is.

This happened last week so more than one boat has got into trouble. We paid a nominal fee for the water and about 1.35/litre for the fuel. I would advise anyone to get their fuel elsewhere to avoid the queue, the usual spanish queue jumpers and above all, the rocks!
