Warning do not overstay your contract at Leros Marina, last year my partner was ill and I asked to extend the contract for an unknown period ie until she had recovered. This situation could happen to any of us at any time - especially to most retired liveaboards. I explained the situation in person in the marina office before flying back to the UK. No problem I was told. Later when I came to pay for the extra time, 2 months, I was charged just like a new arrival - 1600 Eurs. The marina policy is that extensions of up to 15 days are at the long term rate - after that its basically a new contract. So beware you don't get caught out. I have extended my contract at Marina Bay, Cleopatra and Yacht Marine without paying short time rates. What experiences do others have?

You most definitely need to be careful with Leros. Always get a quote up front, although this can be difficult, as they change the rules without telling you.

When I hauled out last year I was asked when I would be launching next year. I replied 'early May'. A few weeks ago I was informed that I would be launching on 2nd of May, without any prior consultation, and that I had a leeway of five days, after which I would be charged €150 for repositioning the boat and cradle. Fortunately the flights that I had booked gave me a few days in hand to get ready.

It's a pity that they behave in this way, as otherwise it is a super place to be.

Thanks for the warning!

Vyv, sorry to hijack the thread, I'm looking into either moving my boat to the med or buying one there in the next few years, how do you get to Leros from the UK? From what i have found so far there are cheap flights to Kos, I can't seem to find any to Leros? Just looking at my options.

Yes, fly to Kos with one of the cheap holiday flights, taxi to the port is about €40 then Blue Star to Leros. The only way we have found to do it in one day. Alternatively Athens, stay overnight then fly to Leros. Returning this way you can get home in a day. The cheapest is probably Easyjet to Athens, then Blue Star from Pireas, sails at about 1900, arrives 0400, not every day.

My boat is also ashore in Leros (Evros) Marina. Like ncahill99 I have had to extend my contract as I am just about to go into hospital here in the UK for a hip replacement. I have had no problem in extending my existing contract by a further year. The one proviso is:, should the yard need to move my boat I will be charged an additional 150€ + VAT.

Concerning getting to Leros from the UK, for me the simplest way is to catch the early BA flight from Heathrow to Athens which arrives in time to connect with the afternoon Olympic flight to Leros. No need to overnight. All other methods require an overnight stop which negates any savings by flying on a budget airline.

Regards,

Steve.

We have tried all sorts of routes to Leros, but our preferred method is Easyjet to Kos, a2b transfer to Kos town (17 euros for two this year), one night in hotel (35 euros), finally Dodekanisos catamaran to Leros. If the cat doesn't run we have the alternative of the Blue Star ferry in the evening. It 's actually the cheapest way for us and relatively unstressful.

We went home last year with Olympic Leros to Athens and then Easyjet to London which worked well.

Booking through with Olympic is expensive and in the past our Leros flight has been significantly altered so that we have spent long hours at Athens airport which is not fun.
Staying in London for an early flight to Greece adds more to the cost than a hotel in Kos.

Leros is a lovely island... pity I can't say the same about Agmar Marine at Partheni. Bunch of crooks!

I bought my Contest 33 there a couple of years ago. The previous owners had paid up front for a year, as well as a lift in and out. There was still 10 months left on the contract plus the two lifts, the b#stards made me take out a new contract. I argued the case but no joy, I was on the hard and between a rock and the open sea... and they knew it...

As for flights... I flew out with Ryanair to Rhodes and got the ferry down to Leros.

Hi Vyv
Agree with your advice
Yep Ive been caught out by that moving charge.
I had to change our plans for an Easter launch and I fly out mid May.
I'm obviously paying for additional time on the hard but they have also charged me E175 to move the boat out of the way of others being lifted
Steve

PS Sean- Although I dont like Kos itself, Kos is a very nice Marina with an obvious advantage of easy flights to the UK but there is a waiting list. Last time I checked I was 49th on it :(

We arrived in Leros midday today. Weather superb, a bit too warm for us when we reached the yard. NW wind during the afternoon, i guess force 4 - 5. Best news is that the toilets and showers are commissioned, excellent job and sufficient space for the forseeable future. Not many pontoon berths free at present but almost no boats on the outer wall.

Hi Vyv, very envious that you are there and I still have a couple of weeks left to wait. :(
Hope you get afloat soon and have a great season
I'd be interested to hear if it looks like the yard have moved Canopus yet. (Ive had to pay this moving charge as per the original post on this thread)
She was on the hard towards the (sea) end of the yard and 2 or 3 boats in from the marina side
BTW - Good news about the weather and the facilities.

Just returned from Leros after getting boat in water . Excellent toilets . Excellent service . People very friendly . You have to read all the terms of the contracts though before you sign. Take nothing of r granted . Its a very busy marina on a beautiful island and they can afford to stand their ground ( excuse the pun )

Could do with a joker boat though . My engine stopped coming out of the launching area and we drifted on to some boats at pontoon B near by . Thank goodness it was not windy at the time . Something waiting for an accident All Baba could do was look anxiously from the pontoon and grab ropes when we got near

so have a plan B

What choices with this in mind do we have for a Catamaran 44'x23' for dry storage as we are heading to Turkey now?
Cheers Aussie.

There are two yards on Leros. The one this thread is about is in Ormos Lakki. First class marina, storage somewhat limited as it is extremely popular. Convenient for ferries, five minutes in a taxi or 15 minutes walk. The other is Agmar, at the north end of the island. They probably have more storage space, cost about the same, and extremely convenient for the airport, you could walk there in a few minutes.

There are other marinas/yards at Samos and at Kos but others would need to advise about their situation as regards dry storage.
