A short write up of my trip from Wareham to our new berth in Weymouth.
As this was basically a one way delivery it was easier to go alone and my wife drive the car to Weymouth.
I've been watching the forecast and daily reports all week and since about Monday there's been a steady 20-30 knots from the South, if it stayed like this I would have postponed, but on Friday/Saturday am the forecast was 20 knots in the English Channel and 10-15 knots closer to shore so I decided it was worth going and if it was too uncomfortable, I could turn round.
I left Wareham at about 10.30am.ww1.jpg

I cleared Poole Harbour at about 11.30 and although hazey I could make out tge Needles on my Port side and Old Harry clearly visible ahead and the sea state looked good so i continued on. This is just passing Old Harry with Swanage Bay to the right and Handfast Point ahead. Once round here I'd be more exposed to the Southerly

The waves did build up a fair once around but as I was punching an East going tide the bit of West in the wind helped smooth the conditions to an easily manageable level.
Here I'm just about to pass St Albans Head and because I'm against the tide at one point my speed dropped from SOG 14knots down to about 7 but only very briefly. I got quite lumpy just before this picture was taken as I was probably a bit far off and as it was about 2.5 hours before slack water the tide was roughing things up a bit.

Once level and close in enough things calmed down

Not really many worthwhile photos between here and Weymouth but here's and Bats Head (and probably Durdle Door) there Somewhere just before Weymouth Bay

Thanks. It's one of those trips that asked about occasionally. I took quite a few photos this time but as it was a bit of a wet and bumpy ride they we're taken through splashed window.
I've got some video clips that one day I may splice and edit out the bits that make me dizzy

Great trip ,well done and thanks for the report. We've nearly always had lovely transits back and forth, although we're now permanently in Brixham so not having to but always loved doing the journey and stopping mid way etc, it was always exciting doing a transit round Portland, always got nice water so no complaints . I also think St Albans is always a bit underrated with regard to potential nasty water, tend to give it a nice bit of water outside.

My biggest concern about the inside passage was what effect the Southerly wind would have. It got lumpy approaching St Albans from the East but was short lived and once past levelled off. With the overalls to the East, I think had the range boats been out (this trip was on Saturday)I wouldn't need to change course too much. However if the tide was flowing West, I may have.
Only done Portland Bill once in a motorboat and got it completely wrong!

Yes on the Westwey Road pontoons. We've wintered at Boatfolk before but this will be our first full season.
Welcome to Weymouth!
If you take your boat out for the winter, I can recommend Weymouth and Portland Sailing Academy as an alternative. Really nice people and very helpful. You can get a quote from their website.

Thank you, very useful. I should say though, we only launched last Monday after a minor refit. Just needs a good clean now! Mh excuse when she was on stilts in the carpark, you couldn't see the topsides ?

Great write up Col, glad to see she is back in the water.

We took the Mitchell to Weymouth in the Summer, its lovely place to go as a family with a youngish child, really geared up well to do stuff for them.

I've just remembered, the water in the marina is brackish. On the ebb tide, fresh water comes down from the river Wey. With the heavy rain we've had recently, you'll see brown water come through. So, you'll need aluminium anodes (but as you've come from Wareham you probably already have them)…
