Wanting to extend my expertise electrics and electronics

I have a reasonable grasp of engines and drive systems - at least I understand what I am told by those better informed than me. I am totally clueless on boat electrics and electronics. My winter mission is to get at least a bit up to speed - part of which will be the fitting of a stand alone fishfinder. Can the forum suggest the best way to get the basic understanding - I struggle with things like busbars, isolator switches and the like on the electrics front and the whole NMEA thing is gibberish. That said I am OK on home electrics so I can wire a plug and the like and am reasonably IT literate (well I managed to get my pics up on photobucket)

Tim Barlett's article in August YM did it for me as it was simple to understand but logical.
