Hi. I want to leave my catamaran in Lanzarote for 3 weeks. Can't afford a marina. Any ideas, please? Security is very important of course, and good shelter. I wondered about Puerto Naos, leaving her on anchor there.
Have tried in vain to get a contact phone number for the very small 'marina' in Naos - just 2 pontoons. Anyone able to help?
Advice on either or both those questions much appreciated.

Hi! Can't help much with info but would think very very carefully about leaving the boat at anchor for any length of time let alone three weeks. It's impossile to forecast the weather for a week in advance.

A catamaran was anchored in the anchorage at La Linea next door to Gib because the owner felt he couldn't afford the marina fees. He left it for a fortnight and went back to the UK. Half way through areal hoolie blew through and dragged his cat out into Gibraltar bay and smashed it against a moored tanked until it sank! Now, the anchorage at La Line is possibly one of the most sheltered I have ever seenbut that doesn't help much if there's noone there to reset the anchor should it drag. I don't think his ins co was too pleased either.

Not trying to frighten you, just offering this bit of someone else's bitterly learned experience. Now if you could find a good mooring and you're happy with it then well and good. I appreciate the costs of marinas can seem an awful lot but could be money well spent?

Good luck.

Chas

We have a couple of weeks booked at the Rubicon marina in October the price is not too bad and there seem to be good facilities. Although we are also a cat we are a bit smaller so I can stand the cost.
I can't think of anywhere I would want to leave the boat on anchor for that long in Lanzarote, not unless you can get someone to look out and check on it for you.

Hiya, I would certainly think twice about leaving your boat unattended at anchor for 3 weeks. You may get away with it in Nao or behind the breakwater at Arrecife. Security then becomes a problem on an unattended boat. Crime here is low but it will make you a target in probably the most likely areas. The 2 pontoons in Nao are full with small local boats and probably unsuitable anyway.
As I mentioned in an earlier reply, the marina on Graciosa is stunningly cheap especially for peace of mind. regular ferry to mainland and bus service to get you to airport, may need to change in Arrecife.
Better than your boat getting trashed!!
Hope this helps.

OK, further to my last, the port attendant in Puerto Naos is Mr. Chou, telephone 0034 676 825559. He is the guy to talk to re anchoring, marina berth or best of all, swinging moorings. Also looks after unattended boats. Don't know his charges though. You may have to be patient trying to talk to him, things go slowly here!!

We have anchored in Naos three or four times but, while our anchor (CQR) held well, others didn't, and we had to do a couple of very rapid 'up anchor and get out of the ways' when other unattended local boats dragged.

In short, the holding is VERY patchy which, added to the carefree way others sometimes anchor, would not let me even consider leaving a boat at anchor there unattended. There is, however, a tiny, rather delapidated 'marina. at the far end which was controlled, when we were last there, by a somewhat dubious, easy-going chap who was quite happy to pocket a few quid and charge us for fewer 'formal' days.

Having said that, we were only in the marina on one occasion for a few days (to pick up in-coming mobility-restricted crew) so this may not still be the case.

Personally, and having seen what a change of weather can do in Lanzarote anchorages, I'd be inclined to swallow hard and open your wallet - perhaps in Porto Calero.

Why not go to Graciosa? It truly is a perfect place to leave a yacht in! It's cheap and safe... not too mention how beautiful it is! The only downside of it is that there is no water and electricity on the pontoons. The fact that we only paid 4 euros a day per 30feet boat more than compensated for that though!
cheers

Agree with the two previous posters who mentioned it . . . Graciosa is totally safe and very cheap, even for a cat.

I wouldn't be keen to leave a boat in Puerto Naos even on a safe mooring . . . it is the only place we visited in the Canaries where we felt it necessary to use our dinghy lock.

I was in P.N about 12 years ago so not exactly up to date info...but....the wind never (and I mean never) dropped below 20kts for the two weeks I was there. Also, I had to move the boat (hurridly) one morning when the locals wanted to move a hulk from one side of the harbour to the other. I left my boat in the 'marina' in P N for three weeks and there was no problem but I most definitely wouldn't leave a boat unattended at anchor for more than one night.

We left our boat in Graciosa for a month Nov 06, worked out much cheaper than Lanzarote including the cost of short ferry ride to Lanzarote and taxi to airport. 38 ft about 5 euros a day. Sheltered marina. All you get in marina is pontoon, short walk to cold shower. Watch flight timings with ferry times. Google should give you ferry times and cost. Nice Island very laid back.

Very many thanks to all who have contributed such helpful replies.
However, life has "intervened" and I shall not now be leaving my boat (Avanti) /forums/images/graemlins/smirk.gifthere in October, but shall be arriving only in mid-December. Anybody in Lanzarote for Christmas, look me up, come and have a festive drink or three ....
