Wallet-Swin Spitway Depth

Larry (aka Gladys) and I plan to redo the Spitway very shortly, perhaps the next springs later this month. We past through down to do the SW Sunk and found nothing to cause concern but of course that is just two 'passes through'. There was a major professional survey from the Naze to and including the Spitway in November and December (the Northern Wind). UKHO has obviously been going through the data and there have been a series of Notices affecting the Wallet - largely about new wrecks and obstns. There has been nothing about the Spitway and it is reasonable to assume there is nothing dramatic. But if there a trend the likelihood would be the Buxey to try to extend to the east. Over the past 4 or 5 years that slightly better central area (i.e. midway twixt the SWBs and the Wind Farm) has not altered to the worse at all.

But being anoraks , Larry and I would tell you that if there is an eastern wind of over 10 knots expect it to be 'pitchy'(!) so try to avoid LWS there with a skyscraper keel and bide yourselves for a little more flood.

I came through at low water 2nd June.
Tide table for Whittaker beacon showed 1.2m. I had not less than 2.7m. So the chart still seems accurate. I always err to the East, I have found the direct line between the buoys shallower. Least water was close to the Swin end.

Last October I was interested to go through the Spitway on PS Waverly. Obviously read Tillergirl's chartlet, and took the "treat the SWB's as east Cardinals approach. As TG says, once he gets over his 'oliday he'll be pestering me to do the accurate steering needed of another survey...

Thank you gentlemen. Looks like Sunday and a draughty SWly coming up from Queenborough, and fortunately the tide's at its tiniest range, but we will take Dan's great circle route to the east just for luck.

I've been through ghe soirway twice this season (once each way) near springs with 6 foot draft. We prefer to be an hour away from LW when we gobthrough at a jaunty angle, well west of wallet spitway and ell east of swin spitway, heading more or less from or to our Walton pier waypoint. Only if some aberration causes us to pass through at LW do we take the deeper track, a couple of cables to the east of both buoys. As Dick (Cantata) says, Roger's latest chartlet still seems to hold good.

What an asset his chartlets, and the Deben and Ore entance ones, are to us East Coast sailors!

Coming from Walton Pier - If you went WEST of the Wallet Spitway then EAST of the Swin Spitway you would have written the letter "Z" in your chart plotter track. Is that really what you did?
No wonder you need Rogger's chartlets
Better stick to the Crouch Mate. That way you can just bounce bank to bank

Crossed yesterday afternoon in benign conditions, probably about half an hour before low water, a couple or three hundred yards further east, and clocked 2.5 metres consistently across the middle bit. I guess the tide was about a metre over datum, so depths would be no more than a foot shallower than Roger's 2022 survey, if at all (sorry kids, mixing my imperials in)

How we miss Prior's public service dredging the channel, fully loaded with ballast.

Yes being unable to edit is a pain. I cannot even remove my post & that is only 7 days old
