Out boat has a Wallas diesel hob and oven. My wife hates it so I’ve agreed we will swap it out during our winter break in Paris.
Gas isn't really an option as there is no dedicated locker for a tank and running pipes would be a nightmare. Would also have to be designed and fitted by a certified engineer.
So what Ive come up with is a dual ring Induction hob and a microwave/combi oven.
The hob has one ring at 800W and one at 1000W, the oven uses 900W on Microwave and up to 2500W in oven/combi mode
Our inverter/charger is a Victron Multiplus 2000 so obviously it wont run the whole lot but will run one ring and the microwave.
So I an going to get labels made saying “Don't run both rings unless on shore power” and “Dont run oven, only microwave if onshore power”

I was trying to figure out a way of making an interlock so it isn't actually possible to do switch them on but that would require breaking into the units and wiring two supplies which is messy and probably illegal

The Multiplus has overload protection hand has an LED which flashes near overload and then goes solid when it trips the supply. Ive played around with various combinations of existing items (kettle, hairdryer, coffee machine, etc) and its actually take a 500W+ overload over a while to upset it.

Do you think this would be a safe/reasonable way to run? Bearing in mind that it will mostly be myself and my wife using it. We are having guests while in Paris but we will be on shore power all the time then.

Further to this, does anyone familiar with the Multiplus know if it is possible to display the LED alarm remotely ? Thinking of either on the iPad I have the Victron Connect app on or a physical alarm triggered by one of the relay outputs from the Cerbo GX or on the MFD somehow sent from the Cerbo. We dont have a GX touch display as it was one of the things we skimped on when the refit cost got high but adding that would be another option if it would help

An interesting switch as I would have thought the Wallas hob and oven would be ideal for cooking and providing a bit of heat away from shore power. What is it that your wife dislikes about it?

As a general observation I would be hesitant about going all electric without a generator unless there is a sizeable domestic battery bank that could cope and I certainly wouldn’t want to have the limitations that having insufficient power to run two rings etc would entail when away from shore power.

You will want to sell the boat at some point so if you do go this route it might be prudent to hang on to the Wallas as an option for prospective purchasers to re-install.

Its mainly the time it takes to heat and to respond to changes in setting. Heating isnt an issue as we have separate diesel heating. We are on rivers and canals mostly so we will only be away from shore power occasionally. I agree, if we are away from shore more often (if we go east to Italy or west/south to Spain when we get to the med, i would look at a generator although diesel ones seem to be crazy expensive.
Yep, wil keep the Wallas in storage, initially with a friend in the Netherlands but will have to get it to UK at some point

Ah yes, of course. I thought it all rang a bell and I now recall your threads when you were looking and I think the diesel hob/oven got a mention then. Wasn’t there also something about getting an Irish passport?

I have an Irish passport and have had for quite a few years. Was convenient for work to have two passports then and now, with Brexit, makes this trip much easier.

Yes indeeed. We thought Brexit had kyboshed retirement plans but SWMBO holds an Irish passport so we’d be okay. Not sure I am going to mention your winter in Paris though as she might get ideas! 😁

Yes, it’s only 14 Euro a day at the Arsenal Marina but we have been eating and drinking a lot and today she is off to Galleries Lafayette “just browsing…” while I do an oil and filter change on the engine.

Ah, same as us. A great boat but the Wallas hob is painfully slow. We use a festival stove if we want to brew a cuppa and then the hob for cooking. We couldn't get the oven to work this year - any suggestions. It all looks clean and good in and around the workings and gubbins.
Sorry, no idea. We have a kettle and a coffee machine for cuppas.
What engine do you have? Mine is Volvo Penta D6 370 and just finished an oil/filter change and it was very straightforward. We'd done 320 hours since it was serviced when we bought it. We have two different documents - one says every 200 hours, the other annually and between 50 and 400. Anyway the oil was in very good condition. I was a bit worried about using powerful engine like this mostly on canals and rivers but it has been completely trouble free and returned an average of 1.1km/litre against previous owners number of 1.4
Otherwise the boat is absolutely perfect for what we wanted. Small enough to handle easily but enough space for two to live comfortably. We have another couple joining us in two weeks so wil be interesting to see if that feels cramped
