Hello,

I have a Wallas 1800B paraffin boat heater. This was original equipment fitted to my Vindo 40 but, it hasn't worked for some time now.

I have been working on it with no success so far. I am hoping someone out there with practical experience of these heaters can help me move forward.

At present, going through the start sequence results in white smoke billowing out of the chimney, a warming of the wick pot but then no ongoing ignition or warmth.

So far, these are my actions and observations:

1) New wick and heater coil fitted. Coil set up to provide 4mm gap between it and top of wick
2) Fuel pump flow and return all checked and fine. Flowing nicely.
3) Glow wire glows red hot when operated (10.6 volts on battery, 12.8 volts with engine running)
4) The wick is damp with paraffin when checked and lights with a flame easily.
5) The pump operates throughout when the heater is switched on.
6) There is forced air entering the main heater body from the intake
7) The chimney cowl is off!

My latest test was to lower the wick pot and light it with a flame. It lit and burnt fine until I raised it back up into its place in the burner chimney. It then snuffed out immediately.
Of course, to perform this test I had to have the access panel off so any forced air to the burner was missing.

Sorry for the long post but I figured it better to give the full picture to anyone who may be able to help.

FWIW, I have spoken to karunda who were, understandably, non committal about the cause. I have had ebers and mikunis on previous boats and think they are great but this wallas is original spec, built-in and I would love to get it going again.

cheers

A problem with the combustion air supply? A couple of possibilities might be :-

1. Upper gasket on the combustion chamber not sealing properly, I think Wallas recommend softening it with water prior to initial assembly.
2 Is the SS exhaust pipe co-axial with the combustion air intake pipe intact. If it's broken, or off the spigot, then exhaust gases could recirculate straight back into the combustion chamber.
Hope that helps.

Fixed it!

Thank-you for your reply.

I followed through the sealing washer theory and dismantled the burner chimney assembly to find that it was clogged with greasy soot.

Most of the holes in the burner cone were closed solid by the stuff hence no oxygen for the flame.

I cleaned it all up and it fired first go.

If only I'd looked up there in the first place I could probably have saved the cost of a service kit.... but at least I hope to be set up for a few seasons now.

Thanks again for advice and someone may benefit from searching on this post in the future when they have a gummed-up chimney too.

Spare Parts

Hi,
I have the same 30+ year old 1800B heater. I am looking for the wick set. Can you tell me where you purchased it because I am having a hard time finding one?
Thanks!

Re: Fixed it!

I have same problem with smoke and service kit installed.
How it looks "burner cone were closed solid by the stuff"??
