\"Wakestock\" 2004

So - I get another weeks holiday in North Wales, and guess what?? It coincides with the wake board riders national annual competition in Abersoch / Pwllheli (North Wales). Now I don't know about you southern based chaps, but I quite fancy this.

Consider the following; motor over to Abersoch with a fridge full of food, wine, beer etc. and hole up to watch the riders (with binocs, I think). Then settle into the afternoon with more wine etc. while the live bands and DJ's set up on the beach and play into the night (with more wine and beer). Stay overnight and motor back the next day.

Now I might be 47, but this has huge appeal and weather permitting this is what I am damn well going to do!! The family are also in favour given that I will have my new canopy.

Check it out for yourselves.

Re: "Wakestock" 2004

Dave,

Sorry to burst your bubble but there are two problems with your plan:-

1) They only wakeboard off Abersoch on one of the days - the other day its in the basin at Pwllheli - between the Marina and the Town - much less glamorous than Aber beach, and;

2) All the bands etc play on a festival type site off the Abersoch/Pwllheli road, at a place called Penrhos (which interestingly is behind a sewage farm!) so you will not be able to see or hear anything of the evenings activites from Abersoch main beach, I am afraid. But there may be some stuff going on when the competition is on.

I have to say though, it's not all it's cracked up to be unless you like massive traffic jams in Pwllheli and Abersoch, as well as lots of unwashed grungy types talking gibberish.

Oh dear, I sound like an old man now....

Sorry to be negative, but do not want you to have too much of a wasted trip, though if you get there to watch them doing the stunt type stuff it can be pretty impressive.

As an aside, if you want to spend the night anchored off Abersoch I would keep a beady eye on the weather forecase as you do not want to be there in anything approacing an Easterly.

Hope this helps

Ben

Re: \"Wakestock\" 2004

Thanks Ben - I certainly wouldn't drive there in a car (I almost never do these days) as its much better and faster by boat. From Porthmadog, its 25 miles by car (plus the traffic jams) or 19 miles by boat (much more pleasing). Unfortunately, I can only make the Saturday, so not sure if I'll miss the watchable action. As it happens my eldest daughter is going with friends, so we will be down to a crew of 4 if we go. As for the weather, it is much more likely that I'll be blown out by a south westerly F6 that anything easterly!

Cheers
Dave

Re: Bad sign - daughter disembarked

well, you have only got yourself to blame for the deck decoration jumping ship, and i think it is fairly obvious why she has gone, and you know perfectly well yourself. You have been EITHER

1 Wearing sunglasses designed for someone aged 17, not 47
OR
2. Saying "Yo!" or "Way to go!" or making other pseudo-trendy exclamations or (worse) playing air guitar whilst daughter cringes silently.
OR
3. Wearing old and esp Grateful Dead t-shirt and explaining exactly where you were when unheard-of (to teenager) rock star (eg John Lennon, Jim Morrison, Hendrix) died.
OR
4. Simply been old, and cluttering up the boat with "oldness" instead of leaving them alone and going somewhere else

In fact, admit it, you have done all of these, yes? Sorry bout this.

Porthmadog to Pwllheli...

Well. it all depends how fast you drive Dave! Mind you I only seem to do that journey by car after 8pm at night. It's quite a nice little road too, once you get to know it, if a little tight in places.

Anyway, back to boats. If it is the same as previous years I think that the action may be off Abersoch on the Friday afternoon and in Pwllheli marina basin onthe Saturday at about noon. But I could be wrong. Call the marina office, they will know. You can sort of anchor up in pff the marina and watch it, but you need to watch your depth.

I have to say though, that while it's interesting to watch for about 30 mins after that it gets a bit repetetive, unless you are very into it all. You will be much better off finding a nice, quiet bay somewhere for a long lunch.

I am not yet 30, but am not really a Wakestock type - tents in muddy fields do not really do it for me. Several of my mates went last year and sold their tickets for Saturday after the Friday night - they hated it! However, I suspect it will be right up your daughter's street. I have a 19yo sister who loves it.

If you want a night away, have you thought of going round to Porth Dinallen over at Nefyn? V pretty, sheltere apart from in an Easterly again and with a nice little pub.

Have fun...

Right - I'll get you back for finding me out, then exposing my weakness to this forum without a moments thought for my pride!!

OK - talking of rock stars I will quote..."18 'till I die" from one of my favourite aging rockers, Bryan Adams.

Yeah - and Van Morrison, I've got all his stuff as well. Oh- and you completely forgot the world's best guitarist...no not Hendrix you nerk! Ronnie Van Zant - lead guitar for Lynard Skynard. Now weren't they just the greatest?? Imagine them playing on the beach at Abersoch. Now that would really rock!!!

See - you have exposed me as the sad old rocker that I'm proud to be...

Re: Bad sign - daughter disembarked

yes and no one seems to be coming in to replace them. I wish I had been alive to see Hedrix, Morrison. Or old enough to see the full line up of the Who, Led Zeppelin. Although as a kid I was brought up on the latter two.

I suppose the next Hendrix might be Prince, I don't like his style but I can see he is one of the best. Though I saw Yes a few years back and Steve Howe played a few solo tunes which totally blew me away.

Although, a band from my home town 'the Coral' are definitely worth watching IMO.

I hope Westlife and the other Karaoke type bands remain in history so I can boast to the younger generation I remember them when I am older and more fuddy duddy.
