It is one thing to wait for a tide when you plan for it, however if you plan to set out at a time and find yourself stuck in two meters of mud then it is another matter.
Couple of weeks ago I planned to leave Ramsgate for QB 1 Hr before low water, (good use of Tides Etc). Only problem was that whilst the chart says "dredged to 2M" no one has told Ramsgate harbour that they should carry out the dredgeing on a regular basis. In consequence ther is only 4" of water at low tide on the Eastern pontoons....
Had to wait three hours to get out of the mud then we lost the tide later on. Nice one Ramsgate

If you are not familiar with Ramsgate, the Eastern pontoons were dredged out of a mud bank called the Scrape (with good reason). While the pontoon area was dredged, the remains of the Scrape lies all around them as a trap for a great many visitors.

Use the Western pontoons for preference!

I am very familiar with Ramsgate. I live and keep my boat there. It's the old problem of poor service from the council run marina who can't realise the potential of what should be the best harbour in the country.

Where else can you be in open waters only 2 minutes from the berth yet still be in touch with London and have a pretty town in view of your moring?

And the Council plans to move all the yacht and boat related small businesses located in the arches adjacent to the harbour to an industrial estate outside town. These will be replaced by bistros and other upmarket shops. No doubt owned by councillors and their mates. ;~)

Rye? Littlehampton - no, second thoughts, skip the "pretty" bit there! Anywhere on the Devon and Cornwall coasts now there are regular commuter flights from Exeter and Newquay!!
