My Waeco compressor unit has failed (post last week)

With the help of the Waeco engineer, I have eliminated the thermostat as the problem.

The engineer has asked me to send the electrical unit back to their workshops fo inspection, and possible replacement (£134 ouch)

Apparantly the unit is held on by one screw!

Alas I have fitted the compressor unit into a tiny space, and the electical unit is pretty tight to a bulkhead. I have tried to feel for the screw, but have not found one where I would expect it to be.

Thus I am after a photo of that end of the compressor unit. Whether I can undo it is another matter.

At worst I will have to take out the whole unit, and loose the gas. Hoping to avoid that one.

TIA

If the compressor HAS failed then you will inevitably loose the gas to remove / replace the compressor. However you also mention the electrical unit? Control unit I imagine especially as you are saying it is only held on by one screw. Sorry don't know the waeco unit so cannot really help

Waeco say that the most likely failure is the electric box, which is easily if not expesively replaceable.

Hence first option is to take off the box, and get it checked.

If I cannot get it off without removover the whole unit, I may be able to buy a new box, and just wire it up, and stick it to the bulkhead wall.

Waeco will tell if thats possible, but of course there is a chance that the elctrical unit/box is OK, and it is the compressor.

When I fitted mine, a CB40 (grey box with compressor at one end underneath) I removed the compressor and fitted the box above the shelf and the compressor below. From memory there were four screws hold it in place, now going through the shelf and holding the fridge tight.

When removed like this the pipes remained joined, Waeco very handily give you about 2ft of pipe so you can locate the compressor, but most certainly, removal of the whole unit will mean breaking the pipes.

Now, the only thing I can think he means might be the corner unit inside the fridge that has the thermostat adjust knob. I have heard that the thermostat is a weak component in these fridges and you would think, that module would be the control unit...

Best bet might be to call back and ask him to clarify what is to be removed. From memory, underneath is the cooler, expansion tank, pump and pipes, much like an ordinary fridge.

Can you tell us what is wrong with your fridge, in case something similar occurs to mine in the future, and, where this control unit is located when you find out?

Thanks for your input.

The thermostat works, alas.

The electrical unit is the black box, where the two power cables, the fan cables and the thermostat cables are connected.

The Waeco engineer told me that this black box is held on by one screw!

As another post remarks, the unit looks after voltages etc and relays for the thermostat.

Apparantly the actuall compressor is very reliable, thus the box is suspect.

Also as the other post comments, it would be a shame to but a new box in case the compressor is the faulty bit.

Hence Waeco want to look at the box first.

Its too cold for a fridge anyway at the mo.......
