Hi Folks,
I'm looking at getting a new fridge and I think the Waeco RPD-65 would fit ok, does anyone have any experience of this fridge?
I'm also considering the Isotherm cruise 65 with ASU, but I'm not sure how much the ASU willl help me as I don't want to run my engine for an hour a day to and would prefer to rely on wind generator/ solar power. As I understand it the ASU kicks in when the engine is running and stores the extra power produced by the alternator then releases it over the next 24 hours.
Planning on heading for warmer climes in the next few years, so that needs to be factored in.

Thoughts please?

Cheers,

Crispin

For what it's worth we have two Engel fridge freezers on board, they look like small bar fridges that run 24/7 in the tropics on solar panels, Make Engel, Model srt-5108d-g4-gl ac/dc 48w ac 240 V DC 3.5 amps, 13 kw per month 85 litre capacity at 29 kg.

No Connection with them, just a happy customer, they replace a Waeco.

Have just converted an Electrolux gas fridge using a Isotherm GE 80, having dispensed with the gas plate and pipework.

The fridge is about 28 litres, and the compressor unit uses about 2.5 amps on startup and gets the fridge close to O degrees in about 1 hour, including contents. Once at the temperature, it stays using only about 0.8 amps per hour.
Yesterday, in Force 5 winds, the Rutland Wind generator, more than kept up with it so there was no loss of voltage from the 200 amp service batteries.
If you have a reasonable battery capacity backed up with either solar or wind power, you should have no worries.

The Engel we have is outstanding. Uses very low amounts of power, is 12v or mains (autosensing of mains) and freezes or chills in no time.

Thanks very much for the replies, but with all due respect I was asking about Waeco fridges and/or the Isotherm ASU. I'm constrained by outside dimensions and the Waeco 65 is the only one that'll fit, and give a decent volume.

Surely someone out there has a Waeco!!??

We have the Waeco 18 portable fridge on the rib. Gets bounced around all over the place, dumped on the beach and left in the garage during the winter and otherwise generally abused. Now 3 years old and still capable of freezing me sandwiches in an hour if its set too cold. Not cheap but nice bit of kit. If there bigger models are built the same way you won't have any problems.

I now have to eat my words..... started looking into Engel fridges and only found these:
http://www.quaywestmarine.co.uk/products...tor+and+Freezer
Been told that this is not the same company as Engels though. This unit would fit my boat perfectly (I've only got 435mm depth to play with without having to chop a bit out of the bottom rear corner out of a Waeco or Isotherm)

Are they indeed a different company and/or does anyone have experience of these fridges?

Cheers,

Crispin.
