Just put the mast back in place and reconnected all the fiddly wires.
Found that there were 11.7 ohms between the braid and the core of the co-ax.
Detached the BNC and checked the bare cable to the antenna.. Still 11.7 ohms on the multimeter... I've just looked at the earlier post on Vtronix connectionand went to the Vtronix pamphlet link which says that the meter will show a fault, so maybe, just maybe, for once I'm in luck!

My old Mark Dowland catalogue quotes an impedance of 50 ohms for the aerial in question.
Am I safe to press transmit on the VHF or will something "melt" ?
Whaddya think?
Cheers Bob E..

50 ohms impedance is a different animal to 50 ohms resistance on your multimeter- you are safe to try transmiting.

If the antenna is connected, checking across the centre core and braid at the radio end will show a dead short to a DC meter. So, on that basis no reason to fear. Of course this doesn't mean the cable isn't shorted! If you've been careful with your connection, however, you should be OK.

Thanks very very much , You've improved Monday immensely!!
So my ohms reading of 11.7 and the bleep on the continuity should be fine..
Next time I'm down I'll ask Portland for a radio check!!!
Thanks again 'n Cheers Bob E.......
