Hi,

I have the standard VP instrument panel matched to my AD31...

When turning on ignition and starting engine the rev counter needle flicks around all the way to the maximum and just stays there?? Engine running fine and ticking over a treat...

Any ideas as to the cause please? have checked behind and wiring all seems ok...there is a connector block with 4 spade that is plugged in, two wires for the illumination but there is another single spade connector next to the connector block that has no wire running to it, and I cant see that there is a wire hanging loose that may have come off that spade!!!

Hmmm confused!

The wiring diagrams are given in the Owner's Handbook which is available on-line if you do not have a copy. According to the diagram, the revolutions are sensed by a wire from the alternator, connected through pin 13 on the main connector, and labelled W at the display.

The wires are colour-coded so I suggest that you try to identify the loose connector from the colour of the wire. Then you can decide where it should be connected.

I very much doubt your display is up the swanny..... as said before, the rev feed comes from the alternator. If the rev counter is operating as you describe, I would guess the rectifier on the alternator is on the way out! Get the alternator off and tested :)

We had exactly the same problem when we bought our boat. I swapped the rev counters over (one of the advantages of twin engines!) to confirm the problem went with the gauge, which it did. I sent the gauge off to Speedy Cables in Swansea. 4 weeks and £140 later it came back fully repaired. The gauge itself was an older style Volvo one with the analogue hours meter from about 1992.

Ah ha, so speedy even though very close to me are in fact slow! Tuh! and £140 eeek!
Coastal rides advertise on fleebay a brand spanker for circa £120! (mine circa 1990 with no hr counter).

Will do a little more investigation regarding back of alternator connections etc this weekend before going down the replacement route me thinks!

Thanks for the replies so far....any further obvious suggestions very much appreciated :)

If you need to replace consider VDO alternatives from a truck shop. Had mine repaired only to have them fail again later. Aperently the pc board cracks due to vibration. VDO ones were half the price of volvo ones and fitted the same hole on an AD41 dash

Bear in mind that if you get a replacement to get one that has the same rev range.
0-4000 or 0-8000 (or whatever it is.)
