Do have my boat shortly and have some problems with my engine

My VP MD2040 which loss revs directly after cold start.
Motor starts normal but dies once bring back the throttle to idle after ~5 sec.

Able to start engine by keeping disengaged throttle on hard revs for ~20 seconds. Afterwards the engine can be brought back to idle .
Looks like glow plugs works well, new starting battery so that should not be a problem.

What is normal starting procedure, and is my experience normal?
Suggestions are welcome

Thanks

The correct starting procedure is described in the owners manual

It should start after 10 seconds preheating with the throttle at idle or only advanced a little . It should not be necessary to open the throttle wide.

I think I would begin by checking that the glow plugs are in fact being energised and remain energised during cranking
I think I would also check that all 3 are OK ie not open circuit.

Most engine probs seem to centre on starting, but when an engine is rolling any variation in output / revs leads one straight to fuel supply. If this has suddenly appeared, filters could be clogged, even a piece of fuel pipe lining is obstructing fuel flow. If the engine settles down after warming and delivers ok, we move on...

The second line of attack is to consider if all the injectors are operating properly.

Starting probs can occur when value seatings are worn. This needs specialised attention. To try to isolate this issue, squirt a fine oil into the air intake on starting cold; if starting responds better, then values are implicated.

Just sharing an experience that might, or might not be relevant. In my MD2B, water found its way to the crankcase through the water pump by failed lip seals. The engine would be stiff at cranking and would shut down on idle revs. When worked at fast idle, the oil pressure got up to 50 psi with normal being 42 the max. I shut down immediately and when checked the oil level it would be grey and above the max level. I pumped out the yogurt and flushed the engine twice. Fortunately, there was no damage. Did you check your oil level?

Hi

My MD2040A start proceedure from cold is -

1) run glow plugs for approx 10 seconds
2) open throttle lever to a fast tickover position (about 3 cm movement on mine)
3) press starter for approx 5 seconds, if it does not start try again.
4) when the engine starts run at approx 1,500RPM until the alternator light goes out then reduce RPM to 1,100 approx RPM.
5) after 2 or 3 minutes when the RPM and engine note are steady reduce RPM to approx 900 until you are readdy to move off.

Regards -
