Hi

I took the heads of my old Volvo MD11c for a de-coke and clean out the water ways, all going well so far.
First question is what's the red stuff under the head bolts? Looks like a nylon washer, what's it for and where can I get new ones?
Next question, anybody know the torque settings/sequence for the head bolts?

Thanks

David

There should not be any nylon washers under the head bolts! All I can think off is either rust or possibly some type of thread locking product. The manual suggests that new nuts be used on reassembly. The manuals used to be available on the web but there was some problem with copyright.

My old manual for this engine shows the sequence but it is hard to describe. PM me with your address and I will post you a copy (printer/scanner/usb problems at the moment).

I don't remember anything under the nuts (nuts on studs, not bolts). In addition to pvb's link to the manual there are detailed parts diagrams at http://www.marinepartsexpress.com/VP_Schematics/DIESEL/.

I hope you've got the water ways in the cylinders cleaned out and very importantly the two small channels in the manifold from the inlet to the heads.

Make sure you sort out the shims that go between blocks and crankcase. They were not packaged as we expected. We gave up trying to check/adjust the compression (Paras 92 et seq) and fitted the standard shims.

Don't put the head gaskets on the wrong way up. IIRC it blocks off one of the water channels if you do.

Take care bending those oil feed pipes.

(PS don't try unblocking a water passage below the thermostat. There isn't one )

the cylhead nuts have nylon inserts
the cyl base shims should be metal and reused do not mix them up as they determine the compression ratio
