My dip stick on the gear box broke off at the part that you unscrew it. Ive sorced the new dip stick but has anybody else have the plastic stick break apart? I did not use any force on it at all.
If so how did you remove the threaded part from the dip stick hole? i think there was a little bit of plastic still pocking up . I am worried that bits might crumble away and fall into the gear box. I am waiting to go back to the boat in Spain to do this job.
Thanks
Maurice

one alternative could be the way i get broken nylon bolts out of my model aircraft undercarriage when they shear off.

Using the cooker heat up a suitable bit of metal ( or screwdriver blade ) to a dull blue heat and sink it into the plastic. It may take 2 or 3 goes to get it deep enough as you don't want it so hot it makes an over size hole. Once you think you have enough purchase cool the implement and then screw the offending part out.

Are you sure it is a screw fit? Most I have seen are push fit with an O ring . If that is the case drill and tap a bind hole in the top for say 6mm to create a new "handle".
If you don't have a tap you could try warming the bolt as above.

Hope that helps .

Depending upon what is left, you could use a combination of sharp points, pliers, drills etc to remove the remnants. Remember that if you heat objects in a flame, they will penetrate the plastic and allow you to turn it, once cool, without any danger of creating loose bits of plastic. Having said that, a few bits of soft plastic in a non-hydraulic gearbox won't actually do any harm, although it's best avoided if possible.
