Going to view Targa 33 and hopefully sea trial her.
Not had these engines before, although I have had the vp dp outdrives.
Is there anything in particular I should be looking out for, other than the obvious like oil in bilges, water leaks etc
She is -1989 with just over a 1000 on the clock
Thanks

First I would pay a mechanic who knows these engines to come on the sea trial....that alone would probably have saved me thousands!!
Based on my experience of same age, same engines.
They should start from cold pretty much on the button if all 100% ( Mine do unless stood for 3 weeks or more or very cold outside)
They smoke plenty on start up. The colder it is the more they smoke. Clears up after a few minutes and does not smoke in use.
Coolant leaks from between exhaust manifold and head, near the manifold drain cocks. Lot of work to replace a 50p seal!!
Check that the drive helmet spindle has been greased from the nipple at the back of the engine. Hard to get to, often ignored, expensive to fix. Give away is water leaking from the spindle (under the tilt angle sensor).
Be very wary of any tendancy of the engines to run warmer than normal under load (about 90 deg C), even if they dont actually over heat. Usefull to have an infra red temp gun in your pocket to confirm gauge readings. just lift hatch and point at the thermostat housing near the sensor.
When accelerating onto the plane anything more than a whiff of black smoke is not normal.
This is just stuff that caught me out....good luck!

Thanks very much for your input, very helpful, have been told by others about the infa red temperature gun.
Just contacted a mate of mine who monitors battery banks in large UPS systems and he has got a really good one I can borrow.
I've looked the boat all over whilst on the handstand, but this will be the first time I've actually heard the engines running.
A very good friend is hopefully coming with me,who is a whizz with Diesel engines ( but not qualified mechanic)
If there is a sense of something amiss ,I think I will pull the plug on the whole deal
Cheers.

Its a 27 year old boat so the chances of there being nothing amiss is probably slim.
More a case of understanding what you are getting into than pulling the plug, and making sure your price takes into account what might need doing soon or now.
The manifold / head leak referred to above took 4 years to get bad enough to need fixing....but was always there!

Dpb,
This is the situation/dilemma I currently have a FAIRLINE SUNFURY re engined in 2005 with YANMAR 315 on bravo 3 dp
I have always wanted the Targa 33 tri cab layout, the one I'm looking at is in Holland ( it's on Appolo duck) got to have the Europe link open to find it.
They are a lot older engines than what I am used to,but I'm torn between a rock and a hard place as the boat I have is great, and pops over to France no problem. It's just a real squeeze when away for long periods of time.
I don't have a lot of spare cash to throw at the deal.
