The silencer/water trap on my engine has started to leak black water. It's not much at the moment, but I expect it will get worse...

The unit seems 'just' to be a rubber tube with two stainless steel ends to it and the water is leaking between the rubber and the stainless end plate at the 'downstream' end.

Is it OK to pull off the end plate and add some sort of sealant (what?) and then re-fit, or is there some other gubbins inside I don't know about?

I am not familiar with that model but if it really is a water trap as well as a silencer, then there ought to be some baffles in it as well that trap the water and discourage it from getting back into the engine.

I would be all for stripping it down and having a look to see why it is leaking. I can't forsee any problem with some sealant if that's all that's needed, but I would be looking carefully as to why it's started leaking before I just slapped sealant into the gaps. Is the rubbed breaking down? Is there crevice corrosion in the stainless? Is it really the gap or has the stainless become porous.

It is just 2 ends connected by large rubber hose with high in low out connections hose is thin walled not wire re enforced as in deisel exhaust style

Simple to strip and rebuild hose was extortionate price though.

Thanks all - that all sounds very plausible. It's £250+ for a new silencer because (surprise, surprise) you can't just buy the end plates any more.

As it's only a drip at the moment I suppose it will keep until the winter though...
