I have a leak from the sea water pump on my MD2020. The pump is made by Jabsco - or so I believe.

I have got the pump off the engine and it on my workbench. My Volvo workshop manual dscribes nearly eveything apart form dismantling the sea water pump!!

My question is: how do you get the gear wheel of the end of the drive shaft? I have removed the lock nut but the gear is well and truly tight. From a drawing from the Jabsco web site the shaft would appear to be tapered; so do I need a gear puller ???

Any advice greatly appreciated.

you need a puller, basic 2 leg one will do, leave the nut on loose, to avoid damaging the thread and you in case it flies off and just tighten slowly. if it is a later pump (having said that i think the jabscos are the early ones) you will be able to buy a very expensive shaft off vp.
just curious why are you removing the gear? if it is to replace the shaft carry on, if you are just replacing the seals you dont need to disassemble the gear end.
take the front cover off, pull out the impellor and you will see the seal set in the housing, get a small electricians screw driver and drive it VERY CAREFULLY !!! between the edge of the seal and the housing, you are trying to distort the old one, and hook it out,
clean up all the surfaces with a bit of worn fine emery and obtain new seals from keyparts (look in the back of the comics for the contact details) you can also take the bits to a motor factor and ask him for seals, unfortunately they only have them a bit thinner, jabsco used an unusual size, however this can be to the good. the thinner seal allows you to get the lips on a different part of the shaft. i change the seals every year now and put loads of grease in the lips.
the 20X0 series engines suffered from a prob with the jabsco pump in that the shaft would wear where the seal touched it, this was exaserbated by silty water. vp put a different one on in later years and only sell bits for the later one.
if you have a deep groove on the shaft keyparts will sell you a complete pump for about £130ish + vat, vp is about £270ish. you can also if you are v clever get an engineering co to spray weld and remachine.
hope this all makes sense

Thanks, Stu. That was very, very useful. In fact I only want to remove the seal. I didn't realise you could just "force" it out. I have ordered new seals from Jabscoshop.co.uk. There they have all the replacement parts for the pump, at prices considerably less than VP or Keypart. I think you also answered an earlier mail of mine on the same subject with other useful advice. Thanks for your help, it has saved me buying a puller, or going to the local mechanic - I just hope the shaft is in good nick else I will have to fork out another £58 + Vat (Jabsco price).

Thanks,
Alan.

well you did me a favour as well, didnt realise that the jabsco shop existed with half price shafts !
just be careful with the screwy, put the effort toward the old seal and it will come out ok, when you replace put a bit of hylomar on the outside of the new seal.

Got the seal out with no problem. Doesn't look like the shaft is damaged, so hopefully the new seal should solve the problem.

What is hylomar?? Something like blue water resistant grease??

Hylomar

It's a non setting liquid gasket, a few pounds for a tube from motor factors, very useful stuff to have on board.

sorry
hylomar is a jointing compound and is non hardening and breaks easy yet sticks like shit to a blanket, it is a tranlucent blue and does not make a mess like red hermatite does. used to use it when i was a whippersnapper working on rolls royce eagle diesels, they recommended it and i have used it ever since.

Glad you managed to source the seals from Jabsco, just a word to the wise for other readers, be careful buying non original seals for things that have sea water in them, as they probably won't have a stainless steel spring behind the lip, in which case the new seal will last about a month before the non SS spring rusts away and then the seal leaks again. A good seal supplier usually has SS spring in stock so you can replace the ordinary one.
