Well it looks like the twins (engines) have finally decided they need a bit more than 'normal' maintenance.

Both raw water pump are leaking, new seals and impellors make no difference so it must be time to look a replacement.

With the wealth of information here I'm hoping someone can guide me in the right direction.

The local VP vendors want my next two new born children or huge ransome.

So what's the alternative, I found some in the USA around $500.00 AU.

Somebody must know a better way. So over to you and thanks for your time and effort, is is appreciated.

Good luck and fair winds to all. :)

I don't know how you arrive at that conclusion! If new seals don't stop the leaking, the shafts must be badly worn; and you can buy new shafts cheaply from your local VP dealer. Why buy the whole pump?

Just had mine done by Motortech in Port Solent. New seals, shaft, cam and face plate almost complete rebuild apart from the pump housing itself which is fine and was pleasantly surprised at the cost!

Might not help the OP, who's in Australia, but the principle is right - it's a very easy recon job, even DIY.

I have no problems with pulling them and refurbishing them, I done this many times, including replacing the shafts, problem being the new shafts only lasted a bit less than 2 years.

Water pick up is via a normal thru-hull intake rather than through the leg/s, this reduced the build up of silt and gave us moor flow. however the amount of silt in the water is contributing to the rapid decline of parts.

I was hoping for someone to advise me on alternative pumps, pumping methods or other equipment I could adapt.

Still looking.

Possible to use pumps of centrifugal, or turbo type, - or however you call this is English... - not rubber impeller kind, but same kind as works in fresh water cooling circuit. But seldom fitted. I knew only one engine originally made with this type of pump for seawater, old kind plant for fish trawlers, river barges. Those pumped the sand through, no problems ;)
You may look for this, as it was based on 6 cyl Leyland type engine :)
The pump must naturally be made of bronze and such, not just automotive; but probably it can be found, and fitted on pulley.
Such pumps were also used as high output bilge pumps, engine driven.

Found it - something like this: http://www.wsk.com.pl/images/produkty/pompy1_11.jpg

Other idea - centrifugal pumps are used in various hydraulic systems, and in food industry they must be made of stainless steel - so this is sea water resistant. Just to adapt for a boat.
