The raw water pump on my VP 2003 is leaking from the back. I'm familiar with the repair, but is Volvo the only source for the parts?

If the pump follows normal volvo practice it will be from a subcontractor such as Johnson.

It sounds like the seal has failed behind the impeller allowing water leakage through the weep hole in the casing around the spindle. This wee[p hoole stops the water pressure builing up in this void and finding its way into the sump and it is quite safe to run with a slight leak until it can be fixed.

You will probably need a new inpeller and pair of seals and pssibly a pump spindle.

The seals are bog standard items and available from any bearing supply house in your area. The ones fitted are probably single lip.

If the shaft is damaged by seal contact it is sometimes possible to obtain a slightly different seal design or double lipped seal which bears on unworn parts of the spindle which saves many pounds.

The impellers are available from most chandlers an agents who sell the original Johnson spares.

The spindle might be more of a problem if specially machined to match the 2003 however if only slightly worn then fitting a different seal of the same size could allow the old shaft be re used.

seals come as single lip and double lip also with lip at different positions in the bore . Moreover the seal can sometimes be positioned in different locations in the housing so it bears on unworn shaft.

Try ASAP for parts.

I am sure that it is actually a jabsco pump. The impellor number should be on the impellor, which should be able to be cross referrenced to the unit - you should be able to get a replacement unit - possibly from Partco - or ASAP?? I think all of them have the same mount unit, as there are a variety of capacities fitted. I have the 2003T which is a slighly higher capacity.

Probably twice the price at Volvo!
