Apparently the powers that be on the UKs second best river are having a bit of a larf and organising some sort of competition regards who can best erase the the natural river habit surrounding locks and produce the most over manicured "Chelsea Flower Show" effect possible.Extra points for over 50 hanging basket full of Pansies ?

We on a real river could do somethimg similar and give them a few tips on what a rural lock in a rural setting should look like and its not making the immediate area the marine equivilent of a bliimming cross between a golf course and the local Tesco garden centre,
A lock without a single lawn,herbacious border or pansy filled hanging basket for miles and miles.

I like Lock 15 on the Crinan Canal, clean, tidy and functional. Best of all it opens out to the sea. Despite the lock keepers doing a great job of keeping it spick and span, it is still used by commercial and leisure boats and as such has that 'lived in look'...need to find a pic now.

Sounds like a proper lock to me.....now what sort of award would be suitable for the award winning "proper lock"?

....what would happen if everyone voted for such a Lock? Personally I cant stand buckets full of unnatural annuals whether its in a garden, lock or rural railway station. I just associate it with nasty knitted toilet-roll covers with Flamenco dancers on top.

O No ...please please do not give the Thames "launch" owners any futher ideas.

The blooming place is shortly going to be festooned with some marine version of knitted bog roll holders,if past experience is anything to go by.

......I feel the on-set of a wave of nausea...antimacassars on the seats.....flock wallpaper round the cabin....hanging-baskets instead of fenders....and stickers along the rear of the hull saying 'Hoot if you boogie in Benidorm'....

Methinks I'll vote for just a plain-old, well managed, helpful lock with none of the fancy stuff.....and as a newbie hope I will be forgiven
